clear coat thickness individual paint

Do the BMW individual paints have extra layers of clear coat. Ex: Citrin Black, Ruby Black, Azurite Black ? Is it the same thickness as the regular.

I noticed on our 7 citrin black the clear/paint seems to be thicker than the jerez black m3 when looking at an angle ??? This could just be an illusion.

you cant really tell that just by looking at it...I believe you are talking about orange peel, and honestly, you can have orange peel look the same on a repainted car with 150mics all over as you can with a factory car with just 80mics. Some cars are worse with the OP, yes, but the only things you can see from just looking at paint are thin spots where its not safe to polish anymore...most of the time you will need a PTG to figure out thickness

Eric is correct. You'll need more than just a visual glance: you'll need a device to measure. Different colors give different effects. Metallics usually look more chiseled while non pearl/metallic paints usually look deeper. It's the nature of the color.

The paint process CAN be different for different colors, but usually it's fairly the same regardless of color.

+1...you can not tell clear thickness just by looking!

I can individual MCB E90 and it definately has orange peel but was painted differently than the normal cars. Under the hood and in the seams are painted a flat black.
I wonder why, could it have been painted by hand?

agreed I can't tell the thickness of the paint by looking at it , what I was trying to find out is do the individual paints have a thicker clear coat that the regular bmw paints ?

the Individual stienway and sons edition 7 series has 3 clear coat applications.

orange peel is present on both the citrin black 7 and the jerez black m3. But the 7 paint has a deep look to it vs the m3 paint. Again this could be due to a number of factors.

I have just gotten into detailing/polishing so this stuff fascinates me.

repaint is all I can think of, new parts come with a flat black look and the whole thing might not have been painted, only the top (half assed IMO)

could be something else though, but I highly doubt its from the factory like that. Even on a new car, the hood could have been damaged during freight and the dealer had to give it a new hood and paint...and no, THAT would not end up on a carfax because "it never happened".
