M3 or 1M

I don't particularly enjoy the look of the car, but then that's how I felt about the current 3 series when I first saw (then I proceeded to get 2 of these). If I had a choice between the two, especially if you already have M3, I would go with 1M.

I don't get the "chick" car comment on the 1M. So personal views on the body style aside, I think if you want a "raw" experience that is closer to the original M3, get the 1M. If you want a refined experience and the roar of a V8 which we may not be seen in another M3/M4 for some time, get the M3.

1M is definitely highly valued right now since there are no more allocations. I think the V8 M3 will be too. However, there are plenty more examples of the V8 M3 than the 1M.

It is a crap shoot. If you don't care about anything but "fun", 1M may be better.

Another thing to consider, if you are not in a hurry and don't care about naturally aspirated cars, I am sure that the next set of M-cars to be produced will out-pounce everything available right now. Maybe wait?

Given how little the OP has provided in terms of likes/dislikes/preferences, it's hard (and maybe pointless) providing a recommendation. That said, this is a pretty good comparison. I can easily see different drivers making different choices from that review. Personally, I know I made the right choice with the M3 (I considered the 1M), but I can easily see how others (such as yourself) prefer the 1M.

Not sure where you live, but you can't even find a 1M in California now. They were sold out before they even hit the dealerships.

If I could find a black 1M, I probably would have gotten one instead of my new M3 Competition. I just don't have the same "lust factor" for the new M3 as I did for my 2006 E46 Comp Package. Its weird, because the E90 M3 has serious balls and can absolutely fly! But I swear, for some reason, I think the 1M is closer to the E46 M3 experience.

I really don't like the orange 1M (screams "LOOK AT ME!"), and wouldn't even buy one it was available (which it is not!). So much of what these cars is seems to be tied up in the visual experience. I really hope they bring out another 1M for 2013. I also hope they punch up the interior quality to match that of the M3.

I'm confused. Why wouldn't you use the 750 as your DD?

If that's going to be your side car then I suggest just getting rid of it all together and picking up BOTH the M3 and the 1M. Drive them 50/50 and then you can say you brought the 'rare' 1M and the 'last' model year NA V8 that BMW is producing.

But then again if money wasn't too big of an issue, I'd hit up a 2012 Alpina B7 in MCB

I agree I found the car now I'm trying to work the price, so far I have the dealer down to $7K over sticker which isn't too bad but I'm willing to pay a maximum of $5K over will see how it goes today.

750 is more my family car I'm looking to purchase something smaller as a small/fun car for myself. I see no point of a B7 if I already have a 750LI M.

If you can get it at MSRP I would say the 1M. I agree that the M3 looks way better and the 1M to most is not attractive. Bought my M3 a few months ago and LOVE it. However I wanted a 1M and could not find one at any dealership in my area at the time. Something about a lighter and more nimble car is enticing. Either way you win -- both are excellent cars. Good luck with the decision.

You're right. They're different rides with different qualities. The E90 M3 is by far a much more practical daily driver (except for the gas mileage.) It all depends on the OP's criteria.

Yeah, though as it's looking like at least for me, the M3 isn't going to end up much worse than my 335xi. I probably averaged 17-18 in that car, and I'll likely be ~16 in this one. For me, the biggest drawback of that car vs the M3 was the engine. The massive torque of the N54 was fun for about a year, then it just got a bit boring.

To the OP, I frankly can't imagine paying a penny over MSRP for the 1M. At 7K over MSRP you are easily in M3 territory, and if you lease, you'll probably end up paying more for the car than an M3. It's certainly seems like a decent trade-off for someone trying to save money vs the M3, but even up, I can't imagine even many BMW enthusiasts picking the 1M.
