The first major highway drive in the car (before the end of the of the breakin) I was getting about 24-25 MPG. Next major trip (after about 1500 miles), I got close 25-26 MPG. Last run (at 2600 miles) got closer to 28 MPG. Each time I was averaging about 75-80 mph. So it does seem to be getting better.

Why not simply fill your tank up completely. The next time you fill up completely, just look at how many gallons you put in. Then look at your odometer and do simple math:

Miles travelled / Gallons used = Miles per Gallon

I don't know how accurate the car's electronics are for the mpg feature, but why not just do it the old fashion way and see for yourself? It's easy enough.

cooler air is more dense, so you should get better power and mileage in cooler climates. it's like having a free and poorly functioning intercooler. (you shouldn't see a diff, but cooler should give better MPG, slightly very very slightly)

Well, I just filled up my gas tank for the first time. The car was handed over to me new with a full tank of gas. After travelling 203 miles, 75% freeway, 25% city, I averaged 20.5 mpg. The odometer now reads 208 miles.

I don't know about anyone else but, since the mini "gas-crisis" that we had when prices rocketed upwards & then shot back down in September, I've been getting poor mileage on BOTH my E46 & my E90.

I've talked to others about this....that own other vehicles...they have noticed the same thing. I think these bastard oil companies are watering down the gas somehow. I know they add more ethanol during the winter, but this is completely ridiculous. I've never gotten such horrible mileage with my 323Ci...and we've had much, much worse winters here on the East coast than this before.

Interesting thread. I have about 600 mi on my 325xi with Steptronic and drive about 25/75 suburban/hwy, that's by mileage, not time. (mostly running D, except for when I merge). I have been getting slowly improving mileage with time, now running about 21, though I haven't reset the calculator yet.

I was wondering how people's experience with manual, step with manual mode, and D have been. The manual mavens seem to harp on gas mileage, but I wonder if people who enjoy manual so much might also have a different driving style (lots of acceleration/decelaration), which may bite into the theoretical gains.

i was getting 24-25mpg, now im getting 26mpg.
i also think if u keep your revs too low and you're trying to go faster, u will get a lower mpg.

I agree. I noticed the same thing with my A4 and my friend noticed it with his E320. There is definitely something wrong with the gas these days..

I think i also depends on where u get gas from. I always go to BP. I always get 25.8-26.7 mpg. U can usually tell the better places to fillup at when u check how many miles u will get out the tank( check it on the cpu. right after u fillup)

This thread makes me feel a little better. I'm doing mostly stop n go city/backroads driving on my roundtrip 6 mile commute to work and have only taken the car on the highway 2-3x. (about 90% city driving)

After 1.5 tanks and approx 390 miles. I'm averaging about 16.5 mpg - I sure hope this improves. I figure with city driving - I should be in the 18-20 range.

My mileage slowly increased during the first 700 miles. When I passed the break-in period and started going heavier on the throttle it dropped like a rock.

Living in an urban area like Southern California makes it tough to get good mileage. When you accelerate from a stop light the MPG needle goes all the way down. As soon as you get up to cruising speed and the needle starts coming up its time to stop again. I can’t get above 21mpg unless I can get some cruising time between stops.

Unless the poor mileage is being caused by a system malfunction, you just need to pay the price and smile. I don’t think anybody bought their BMW to save money.

Interesting.....I got mine in late June. In July & August, the computer told me I was getting 24.5. Ever since mid-September I've been getting about 20.3. :mad:

I tried that too...went from Raceway to Shell to Exxon...same shitty mileage. I was getting about 380 miles a tank on my E46 & now I get about 320 if I'm lucky. :mad:

I always divide miles/by gallons when filling up. I have been getting between 20.3 and 21 mpg (city only no freeway/expressway driving) from the very first tank full--60% "spirited" driving.
and on two trips when I drove @200mi roundtrip each in moderate traffic got 28.5mpg! my experience is that the on-board computer is @.7 to 1 mpg optomistic from my real world calculations
