When to install Winter Tires

When does everyone install their winter set up. I have never had to switch tires for the seasons. I am on stock PS2s and was wondering when I should change over and at what temperature it becomes unsafe to ride on them.

I read somewhere that you can swap to winter tires when the temperature is consistently below 50 degrees.

The Friday after Thanksgiving. It helps to work the turkey off from the day before.

The Friday after Thanksgiving. Its now a tradition. Actually, I also sometimes use Easter to go back.

summer and winter tires become equal in terms of traction at around 7 celsius.

but the mornings are always colder so you have to watch out for ice because no matter what the winter tire will always win on ice.

It's different depending on the climate of your area. As stated above, the good rule of thumb is when temps are consistently below 50 degrees.

I agree, when the tire is dead cold. Even when it's below freezing a summer tire like the PS2 has more dry grip once the tire temp is above 150 degrees or so. Problem is it takes a lot of time to get there. I've had to race more than once on R-compound tires in 30-40 degree temperatures before, and I can say with certainty that I wouldn't have had more grip on a set of snow tires, except maybe on the out lap.

I think German law is sometime in October, not sure though... I usually do the same, when the temps start getting consistently below 50 degrees F, which is usually sometime in October here. The last couple of days it's hit 70 though so it's been very nice!

There is no date not really a requirement for winter tires. Simply, if you are in an accident, and the police determine that you had summer tires when the weather was cold/snowy - you are at fault and insurance maybe voided. This also seems to be case in Bavaria, other are more lenient.

Austria has specific date, I believe its November 1. So do countries up north. BMW Euro Delivery has more detail.

I know that Germany, October 23-30, I should be OK as long as there is no freak snow storm.

For me it's Thanksgiving weekend. If it snows or rains in cold weather before Thanksgiving, the cars with summer tires stay parked. I don't have snows for my M3, and the PS2's get pretty slick under 40 degrees. I drive it in cold dry weather, but I have to take it easy.
