I believe the reason why you think the 335 is the same is because its torque curve from the turbo. The m3 doesnt' have a steep torque curve but is alot faster, just doesn't feel as fast because its normally aspirated.

I've only driven a 335 auto once, it was fun I gotta say, BUT it doesn't compare to the m3 in any single way other then the BMW symbol they share, an m3 is a drivers dream, it handles and performs better then any car I've owned or driven, it's it's price range, and it probably outperforms moreexpensove cars, the only way I would get a 335 is to use it as a daily driver to keep miles off the m3, and I actually think I might do it but there is still no comparison, at the end of the day I will always drive an m3 over a cheaply modded "thrill"

I have to retract my initial post guys. I think what happened is just my misperception of the difference btw the two cars. I got my M back yestarday and fell in love with it again after stepping on the gas pedal.

This is what happened: I was beating the crap out of the loaner but babying my M3. You can't feel the potential in the M unless you push that car to its limits whereas the 335xi is just living in its top potential at normal driving conditions. So false alarm. Just my brain playing tricks on me!!

M3 is still superior than 335

It is funny you felt this way because i just spent the last couple of days with a E92 335i loaner and I couldn't wait to get back in my M. The quick acceleration from a dead stop was nice, but the 335 just didn't have the special feeling that my M3 does. The sharp edge you get with the M just isn't there in the 335. The 335i is a fine car, but it isn't a M car.

LOL...when I read your initial post I said WTF? I was beating the crap out of my 335i for two years and it feels slow compared to my first drive on the M3....the M3 is brutal fast....it's the first time when I get sick driving a car very brutal....I couldn't feel sick driving any other car, 335i included.

someone tell me some solid, materialistic realistic advantages so I can be at ease.
If you need other people to make you feel good about your car after you purchased it then you will have bigger problems down the road (mostly with women).

Wow you ///M guys need to get over yourselves....or I really need someone to let me do a comprehensive test drive in their e9x M3 *Preferably E92 because we all know the coupe is sexier than the others and the E93 is heavy, stupid and a pi-pi po-po head.

I know this is OP, but anybody wanna lend me their M3.

I wanna see what you gays are talking about.

I've owned my 335i for about a year and a half now...test drove an M3 about 3 days ago....I think i'm about ready to turn my lease in early..If you can't differentiate between these 2 cars (not taking anything away from the 335) then you don't belong in an M3...sorry.

To the OP, go buy a Subaru or awd Audi. The M3 is obviously not for you.

I've driven 335 RWD, AWD and Diesel versions. Yes, there's torque... and that's about it.
You don't seem to want handling precision. You want something that'll babysit you.

No offense to 335 owners. It's a great vehicle. The M3 just handles better out of the box and I prefer the 4.0L High revving V8 over the I6 TT.

Of course the M3 is better out of the box....is it worth the price hit ($17,000)?

I mean a $579 will get me as much hp if not more out of the 335i (as most of you know) and a ridiculous amount of torque.

Especially to a person like me, who doesn't track and commutes about 80 miles a day. Any racing I would do is bench/PC-racing or light to light.

My 335i hasn't had any problems except for squeaky brakes in its 38k mile life.

My insurance rates are A LOT cheaper with the 335i than the M3. I mean thousands a year.

I have not driven the M3 in any substantial way, so maybe I will get converted eventually. Til then, I am sticking to my guns about the 335i being a better package than the M3 for the price.

Given the choice to buy a E92 M3 loaded for $74k or a E92 335i loaded for $50k, I would pick the 335i over the M3 every time unless I already have the 335i to be my DD. The M3 is too inefficient for a DD.

Now I know most of you guys are former 335i owners and clearly as a 335i fan, I can appreciate the M3...but tell me the 335i + tune does most of what the M3 does for a MUCH BETTER PRICE. The M3 is the better car, no doubt about it, but if you track and if you have deep pockets. The 335i is just as fast as the M3 on the streets..."make no mistake."

I think you are missing the point. Any car can be made to go fast. I have seen Honda Civics do 10 sec 1/4 mile. Does this make it a great car? If this is how you base your decision I'm not sure what to say. Also, if you consider buying a 335 because you will save money on your insurance bill then you are truly not into it for the performance.

It just seems like you have a need to justify owning a 335 vs a M3. If this is what you want there is no need to look for approval from the M3 crowd.

Regardless what you do to the 335 it will never be an M3.

Just my opinion.

Where did you get a loaded 335I for $50k? When I made the 335i with the same options I have in my M3 on bmwusa.com it came out to over $60k. My E92 2009 M3 was $68k. Your math is wrong.

I was lucky enough to test drive the M3 on the Autobahn. I made sure to test drive the 335i because of the same sentiment you mention, wanted to make sure it was worth the extra cash. The 335i was a nice / fast luxury car. I didn't price it, but wouldn't have bought it. It just didn't really feel like a "sports" car to me. On the other hand just pulling out the parking lot in the M had me giggling like a school girl.

Now the M is in the mail. Too be honest I am a little embarrassed to have spent sooo much money on a car - especially in this economy, kids starving in Africa, and what not. But F*** it - 2012 is just around the corner and the loonies may just may be right.
