just did a google on top gear lap times see below. I guess the moral of the storey is A. get a super charger or B. stay away from the track if there is a 1m there.

tbh i'd have thought the DCT would have the edge but they were both damp conditions so i doubt it on THAT track. still makes you wonder if the interior and better looks is worth another 80k.

That's the good thing about having choices, we choose whichever car makes us happy. All I can tell you is that an M3 makes me smile, makes me happy, and I enjoy driving it a lot. I'd probably enjoy driving a 1M too, just not as much, because I don't like turbos that much. From: http://blogs.insideline.com/roadtest...s/2009-bmw-m3/ lowmilelude says: 05:00 AM, 03/ 2/10 There's a cardiac surgeon at work who drives a brand new M3. Yesterday in the parking lot, I swear to God I caught him smiling while he was sitting in the driver's seat, waiting for it to warm up. That guy never effing smiles. NEVER. |

I'm just a bit confused with the messaging from BMW. On the one hand you've got the 1M that is faster in a straight line and around a track than an M3, but the M3 is double the price. sure looks count for something but double?
If its just the body choice, then you might as well get a 335, same e90/2/3 body choices as m3. In standard form its a better dd than a torqueless m3 and spend 500 on a chip and again faster than an m3, not to mention the joke lounge seats in an m3. So where is the market for an M3? Cant be badge buyers cause they can get the same badge for 1/2 the price? Cant be performance buyers cause again they can get better for 1/2 price? so whats left |

This is the most tired argument, but I will indulge you because I am equally bored at work.
1m great car, too small for anyone over 6ft to look respectable getting into/out of. Thats why its so well marketed to Boi Racers/Asians with a bit of money. 335 looks like a 325/323 etc. just an average looking car with a rather fast engine, every joe schmo can afford. The same argument could be used for the why dont you get a 135 and just tune it to be as fast as a 1m rah rah rah... its most probably because you cant afford it. m3 has that bit of prestige etc. along with performance, not to mention the looks. For my money you cant compare it to either a 335 or a 1m... both cars aimed at different markets. In short it occupies a space in the brand range that the market ultimately dictates and there is evidently enough demand to make it worth while producing... and every m3 driver i have spoken to is just as happy as me! |

Maybe the marketing people at BMW are smarter than everyone thinks, they have been tricking all these people (myself included) into spending money needlessly on getting M cars, when chipping non-M cars is the way to go, obviously (sarcasm, cough, cough). I do like sitting in my joke lounge seats, they are very comfortable. |

La la la. Fanboys of either the 1M or M3 will always seek to say their car reigns supreme - it's all about justifying that they bought the right car!
Anyway, I've the pleasure of having them both and I do admit the 1M feels lighter, pulls harder at low revs due to the turbos, and it does genuinely feel more fun on its feet compared to the heavier M3. However, I have to say overall I still prefer the M3 - there is a sense of luxury/class that goes along with all that hooning, as well as the history & pedigree to go with THE M3 badge, which the 1M certainly doesn't have. Not to mention its more comfortable Besides, I don't always want to have a rough ride 24/7. Hemorrhoids much? Haha! Both cars are nice, but aimed at different markets. Either way, the world does acknowledge BMW has set benchmarks with both these cars, so its a win-win regardless what you have. OT: Trying to take out my CF hood vent cover during my lunch break, and I snapped it in half!!! Fail. How I regret touching it.... Gotta superglue it together and keep it on for now....
