Did the lightning ZAP my modem?

I still use a dial-up service at home In the country. Two nights ago we had some serious lightning (close by).

In the morning the dial-up couldn't connect. The phone line still works (tried both of them).

Is this an open and shut case of power surge going through the phone line and frying something or do I need to take my whole box in for service?

It's very possible that's what happened, but it's hard to tell without more info. Is the modem not connecting the only thing wrong with the computer? Have you done any kind of tests to see if the modem is even operating? Stuff like that.

I know it's kind of a vague question. It's just that the night of the storm it was working fine, in fact flawlessly since 2001. We had some serious lightning cracks later that night and in the morning it was not working.

Something about the port not opening when I ran the diagnostic on the modem.....maybe I should call my ISP and get them to go over my connection settings with me....rule out software issues.....

Wow, someone who still has a dial-up connection...you must really live out there in the sticks in Western Canada! Anyway, modems are cheap - just replace it...you probably took a hit and fried it...next time put a surge protector on the phone line....

Maybe those who no longer need their modem can send him one (free).

I already use a surge protector for the 120v, I didn't know I could get one for the phone line too!

Thanks for the suggestions, let me test again tonight with the one my office tech lent me (28,880k!!!!!)!

How do I live with dial-up? I have an "Internet Accelerator" that renders all image files very patchy if I so request it. Downloads are accomplished quickly this way, and if I want to view a pic in more detail I just click on it.

There is not yet an internet satelite service in Canada since Bell discontinued theirs, and there is supposedly a wireless thing they're working on for the coming year.

Otherwise, my online office solution has a low-res version, so I can work effectively from home when necessary.

What can I say? My internet life begins at work!

Haha... you want me to check if I have one?

That will at least put you on the 1997 bus.

If I don't have one, perhaps the Museum of Archaeology and History in the old port would have one in their gift shop??
