Appropriate product for e92 m3 black trim?
Gurus,
I sincerely tried searching for this, and wonder if I'm simply searching for the wrong terms. I'm trying to figure out what would be the appropriate combination of products to detail the window trim on my e92. It appears as though there is some kind of contaminant on the gloss black trim. Not hard water spots, more like a chemical residue. The trim appears to simply be painted to me so I was going to hit it with paint cleaner, and then a sealant. Perhaps a little glaze on there before the sealant if there are some scratches to cover up. Am I mistaken? Obviously I will do a spot test, but if you have advice, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks! |

I don't thinks it's painted. I believe it is just a high gloss plastic.

You probably smudged it with wax and the waqx contained additives in it which whiten moldings. Leaves a chalky residue. You can try and use ONYX which is a molding cleaner. If you have a habit of doing this I'd find a pure carnuba wax that doens't have additives such as P21s.

For the benefit of others, I wanted to post and say that paint cleaner took this off without issue. As I mentioned, it was a chemical contaminant, not a residue from wax. I used some old Meguiar's Medallion I had, but it was fairly easy to get clean and I'm sure even a cheap paint cleaner would do the trick. Followed it up with some sealant to protect it from future issues.

Meguair's Medallion - it is no longer made due to stricter VOC regulations I believe.
: ( It really was a great product. Meguiar's Deep Crystal System Paint Cleaner should do the trick and is very cheap at $7-8 a bottle. You should be able to find it at a regular autoparts store. |
