RS4= 1650 kg
M3= 1655 kg (Bmw website actually says 1680 kg)

i guarantee that is what the author of this page did.

I know somebody on here weighed the e92 with DCT at 1625 kg. I'm sure that the writer is just taking the basic specs from whatever website pops up on google first.

The RS4 is not 1650kg....its 3,848-pounds = 1717kg

Doesn't matter to me what BMW does in there future engineering projects,I.E. "motors" if its a BIMMER I will buy and support them.... beats driving a VW that I did for 15 years....: dance:

Yeah, I found one source that put it at 1794 kg. Seems difficult to find reliable numbers. I don't really know too much about the RS4

Audi and BMW use different standards to quote their car weights.

- Audi quote kerb weight without driver, gas, luggage - essentially a dry weight

- BMW quote kerb weight plus 70kg driver, full tank of gas and 7kg or so for luggage (from memory - actual details might vary slightly). This is the European DIN standard.

Short answer is BMW M3 Coupe is around 110-125kg lighter or so than the European RS4...the other point to note is that the US RS4 is heavier than the European RS4.

www.rri.se has the following measurements:

- 07 M3 Coupe - 1611kg
- 08 M3 Sedan - 1664kg
- 06 RS4 (European) - 1736kg
- 07 RS4 (European) - 1728kg

Note that www.rri.se use the following methodology for measuring weight:

"All test cars are weighted at Rototest Research Institute with full fuel tank and with all other fluids. All standard equipment is present (spare wheel, tools etc). Car weight may differ due to equipment, air condition, aluminium rims, type of spare wheel, type of seats etc. No driver weight is added."

I'm waiting for the next M3, hopefully I can wait that long. I will be disappointed if they end up with a V6 however. The I6 is so much more balanced than a V6. You gotta think that torque will increase though if they use the twn turbo setup, that plus lighter weight . It will be interesting to see what route others take, especially MB. Do they stay with a V8 and hope to capitalize off old NA M3 owners who jump ship??

Yeah torque definitely will be up - my prediction based upon the article is probably 420-440HP, 400lbft of torque. Cheaper to do this with a modified version of the current 335i 3.0L engine but they might go for a bigger V6 to reduce boost requirements...

Here's hoping the engine will rev with power to at least 7500RPM unlike the current 335i engine...

MB may stick NA V8 but more likely follow suit and move to a smaller FI V8...

FWIW, mercedes has put a lot of work into their KDI (Kompressor Direct Injection) engines and have been awefully silent about them lately. Perhaps the technology will debut on the new McLaren?

Yes, sequential turbo setups have been around for years, although variable vane geometry or similar is probably the way manufacturers would go (I'm assuming you are thinking of a turbocharged setup that delivers torque from 1500RPM to 8000RPM )

The other idea would be the twin charger (supercharger plus turbocharger) as seen on the VW Group 1.4TFSI engine...

I'm sorry I meant this series/generation M3 is the only v8 m3 ever made. All the previous series were v6's (e46,e30..etc..)

I think I will holding on this car for that reason.

The 997 Turbo is a great example of a car that uses twin turbos with variable geometry technology to broaden its power band.

That article was full of mistakes, clearly written by someone who did some quick searches to find the weights of the M3 and RS4 and throws around terms he doesn't fully grasp like sequential turbocharging. I may be splitting hairs here but the N54 uses parallel turbocharging.

The most interesting info in there, though, was the new M coupe that sounds amazing.
