Dinan Drone

I just had the Dinan freeflow exhaust put on my 2011 E92 DCT. I drove it around, and loved it, but then when driving on the freeway noticed drone at 80 mph in 7th gear. It was 80mph at 3200 rpms or so.

I also have the Dinan ECU software installed. Other than that, the car is stock.

It seemed to go away if I shifted to 6th or increased or decreased speed.

I drive on the freeway quite a lot, and this is right in the sweet spot of where I like to park the speed on the freeway.

Does anyone have any advice? Do they all do this and is this just the trade off for getting a sportier exhaust?

I bought the Dinan in large part because I read online that it didn't drone.

Advice welcome... am I just stuck living with this as the downside to having non-OEM exhaust?

SehrSchnell, I wonder if I upgraded to the full system if that drone would go away. What do you think?

The drone isn't terrible, but is annoying and is loud enough to hear with the windows up. It was annoying enough that I considered ditching the Dinan exhaust when I was driving for 3 hours down a long stretch of highway.

i wonder if you got a bad muffler maybe, or maybe you are really sensitive to sounds

the midpipe would not change anything. i had just the muffler for a few months before i got the midpipe and the only difference in sound is above 4k when your getting on it hard it sounds MMMMamazing!!! under 4k at light throttle you can't even really tell the midpipe is on there. you can feel the power gain below 4k as it gives it a nice bump in tq below 4k. at cold start it is slightly louder but thats about it

listen to my cabin videos and lmk if yours is louder then that. i did them with a crappy camera so the quality is not good but you can get an idea of how mine sounds inside the car cruising

I see you're in NY--I would be interested in this setup, but I thought another thread a few days ago indicated that the Dinan midpipe and Stage II software fail NYS inspection. How do you get around this?

I have Dinan rear and an x-pipe and no drone at all. Also ran it with just the rear section alone and it was nearly as quiet as stock.

I would agree with all above......but it looks like I'm the only one posting so far running without the mid-pipe and there is absolutely no drone what so ever. Like you, I too am on the freeway for at least half of my daily commute and the sound is pure butter baby . As previously stated you must be extra sensitive to some frequencies or you have a bad exhaust............Phil

I have a drone in 7th gear at 80mph with my Eisenmann Race. Even though it doesnt bother me at all, when I have passengers I just drive 82mph and its completely gone.

I would check the clamps to make sure you got them seated well. I've seen leaks cause what sounds like a drone.

i would have it put on the lift at the dinan dealer and have them check it for any possible defects so that if there is any you can get a new one and enjoy it. if there isn't you must be super sensitive to drone bc changing mufflers will not help any bc the Dinan has the least drone or none at all compared to all the other mufflers out there. the Akra setup or BMW perf one may be the only others with no drone but those are super expensive

let us know how you make out. if you want to hear the midpipe and rear combo from the outside when you click on my inside video you can view the other ones i made that show the sound of the midpipe outside the car. videos do not do it justice though. the power bump from the midpipe was really nice. it gave it some good power down low where it lacked it before

Put the dinan middle section with there tune for the middle and your car will really wake up...you wont be regretting it. Not to mention you shouldn't have any drone
