335is vs M3

Good afternoon boys and girls,

My dad is currently in the process of looking at a new DD as he can't drive his 997 C4S to work (Employee's perspective etc). He has been a BMW customer all his life, but in the process of getting the Porsche, he took my GTI as his DD since I am in Singapore right now. I will be coming back and therefore he needs a new DD. At the dealership he saw a 335is and was quiet impress with the motor and sound of it. I told him it wasn't really worth it as for 8-10k more, you can get a M3. Is the difference in price worth the 10k? I would think so right?

Thanks!

8-10K more + taxes for an M3 is a substantial amount of money, at least for me. So if the 335is is good enough for him why shouldn't he get it? Have him test drive both cars to see which one he prefers.

He can't drive the 997 but he can drive an M3? I honestly think the M3 is a flashier car. The 335is is not as bad but its still not necessarily a typical DD.

I prefer my M3 over the 335is.... to me it's worth it. However I have nothing against the 335is and my family owns one as well. Both are great cars. But unless you plan to use 414hp of the M3 there's no need to pay for it.

More conspicuous than a 911? Should he show up to work in a Lamborghini?

Just for resale value I think the M3 is worth the 10k extra.

he likes the sound of a 335 motor?

That's the first I've heard of that.

lol. He is keeping the 911 for sure, he just needs a DD. He doesn't people at work to see him get there with a 140k car.

Is the 4 door going to be available as a 2012 model? No right?

If he has one expensive, high strung toy, why buy another? If he is happy with the GTI, there are plenty of cars other than a fender flared, hood bulging 8400 rpm redline M3 that should make him happy. Is he going to tell the people at work that his 997 C4S has a list price starting at $93,000, but his M3 has a list price starting at only $59,000? If he does not want to attract attention, he should buy a more common model of car that does not attract attention.

Tell him to wait for the new M5, and use that as a daily driver

No because he is in Qubec Canada and they both cost a significant amount more than that.

To OP we have a GTi as well and it is an excellent daily driver loaded with leather, tech pkg, and the Huffs it's a fantastic car that as Jeremy Clarkson got right (for once?) "is all things to all people".

Why not get that 1M? I'm assuming it is spoken for. 335is motor, cheaper (actually is in the 50's). Black or white shouldn't be too conspicuous ( might want to stay away from the Valencia orange)

Look at an '08 VW R32. I have one of those with bike racks to haul my bikes. Awesome DD....

M3 will cost approx 15 to 20 more then a 335i out the door with the proper packages.

R32's were never sold in Canada so are extremely hard to come by, but a few have been imported.

Have you driven a 335is? It sounds far more wholesome than the standard car. Any review on the is talks about the exhaust note. Airports you haven't heard that before.

Of course maybe you have and that was just your way of saying you didn't like it.

Do you honestly think he goes around and tell the price of his car? lol.

The point is that nobody at work knows he has one (He has is own business and people working for him are not personal friends, so they don't know about the Porsche and he want to keep it that way).

I'll tell him to look at the 1M. Thanks for the replies!

No, but I think people are intelligent enough to figure out the price of a car, particularly one of those fancy BMWs or Porsches. Hopefully, the employees will also figure out that he is making a lot of money off of them and ask for raises. We own businesses also, and do not hide our cars from our employees.

The M3 really isn't the car to get to blend in. It's very visually loud and people notice it all the time, at least as much as a Porsche 911 (that's speaking from experience extensivly testing both and getting about equal attention).

The M3 also doesn't make a good car to drive in place of a faster more expensive toy because it gets gas mileage that's so terrible, it will kill all endangered tree sparrows within a 100km radious just through proximity alone, it makes Hummers cower in fear and some say each M3 is built with two engines, one to drive the car, and the other to just burn gas sealed within the DCT, which is why dealers aren't allowed to open DCT's on site.

In any case I'd say the 335is is the best BMW to blend in as a daily driver, while still being fun. I'd recommend he get the 335is convertible with all the options and de-badge it. People will think it's a $40,000 USD 3 series, but it's still amazingly fun, comfortable, and 90% as fast as an M3 for 80% the price with 60% better real world gas mileage.

WTF. A 335is Convertible is 40k in the US? Are you kidddding? It STARTS at 74k here in Canada, and presently our dollar is higher than yours.

That is a joke.

Go with the 335i. The M3 is way flashier.
