M-DCT owners: what do you do when you need to park for just a while?

What do you guys do when you need to get out of the car for a while? For example: clearing customs where they make you pop the trunk to show that it's free of contraband. Since there's no "Park", do you stop the engine or just leave it in 1st with the hand brake engaged?

Same thing I'd do with a manual, put it in neutral with the handbrake, but given the characteristics of this particular DCT I see no harm leaving it in first with the handbrake. Obviously on an incline I'd turn the engine off.

Do what you should do if you're getting out of the car regardless of the situation; put the handbrake on. If you are in a manual, and you want to let the engine run, then obviously you have to be in N, and obviously you should put the brake on. DCT.. Same thing, although technically, you don't have to put it in N because if you're seat belt is off and you open the door, it will put it in N for you. You wouldn't want it in 1st because what if your foot accidentally hit the gas as you were climbing out of the car.
If you were insistent that for some reason you wanted it in P, shut the engine off, then start it back up and it will be in P, although I can't think of any reason why this would be something you need, as opposed to just letting it be in N with the handbrake on.

As others have pointed out, with the current software (and any software past sometime in 2009, I believe), the car automatically goes into neutral if you exit with the engine running. So there's no way to leave it in first anyway. Whether you choose to put the car into neutral yourself or just let the nanny do it, well, that's up to the individual I suppose.

I would also generally agree that, unless you are just jumping out to get the mail, grab your trashcan, move your kid's Green Machine (do they still make those?), or something, it is really probably a good idea to just shut the car off.

So you're driving a DCT, treat it like a manual. N + handbrake.

parallel question, since the transmission has so many similarities to a manual transmission in terms of the way it should be operated, does the car roll while you're in automatic on a hill or does it hold in one spot?
