Why is there such a huge discrepancy with the read/write times? Mine was 15 min for read, 10 min for write for my ESS Akra flash.

Excuse me sir but what gives you the right to put me and label me as being broke and cheap. My financial situation is none of your concern last time I remember. For the last 34 years of my life I have never used a battery charger as I didnt need to. I asked a simple question regarding which kind to purchase. May I remind you if you don't have any constructive ideas to contribute then please kindly keep the name calling to yourself.

Roman: I ordered the direct tuning this morning can't wait! Thanks

Would a plain jane battery charger under $60 be sufficient?
You are either cheap or broke... in any case - stay away from modding. You should drive a cheaper car as well.

I have iDrive/EDC.

I bought one of these - they work excellent!

Why would we need a charger? The battery will not be dead; you just need to maintain a 12V current, or am I missing something?

Battery maintainers may not be able to provide enough power. The charger I linked above has multiple power levels - sometimes I had to bump up the power because the voltage was dropping.

It also depends what you have on. Be sure to turn off headlights and daytime running lights etc...

Well I specifically asked Roman if a battery charger such as "BMW Advanced Battery Charging System" or Battery Tender Plus (12V @ 1.25A) will do the job and he said yes. I trust his advice and will be ordering the DirectFlash tune soon and report of any events.

I used a "Battery Tender" brand, about 60 bucks and worked fine for a 2 hour read.
