Just did this today (non-electric). I just used the same pics when it came to removing the original steering wheel. Was very easy. Great write-up!

Here is DIY on how to install BMW Performance Steering Wheel. It is not very difficult you just need to take your time and pay attention to what you are doing.

Tools:

1. Not very big Flathead Screwdriver
2. 16mm or 5/8 socket with wrench and extensions
3. T25 torx socket ( i think it is T25 but I might be wrong)
4. Very small flathead screwdriver
5. 10mm socket

If you are local ( Bay Area ) I can install it for you

This DIY is for you just to look/read and get an idea on how it can be done. I am not encouraging you to do this installation. I will not be responsible for anything that might happen to you, your vehicle, or anybody who might be helping you, or anything else.

Before you start taking everything apart you need to read PDF Instructions in the Post#3 at the bottom and get familiar with it. Make sure you understand what goes where. After you did that, I would recommend to label supplied BMW harness with A1,A2,A3,A4,A5,A6, and A7 tags. It will be easier to figure out what goes where.

1. Disconnect your Battery and make sure your (-) Negative terminal will not be touching battery

2. Remove lower plastic panels on both sides (passenger/driver). I just have picture of the passenger side

Driver side

3. Read PDF instruction and unplug Blue connector

4. Release the side tabs and pop off the Black/Grey connector that is inside the Blue one.

5. Read PDF installation and remove Blue/Red wire from Pin1 and Red from Pin2. Insert A3 into Pin1 and A4 into Pin2. Now install wires that you removed from Pin1 and Pin2 into Connector E

Pulling out wires from Pin1 and Pin2

Connector E

Wires from Pin1 and Pin2 inserted into Connector E

Wires A3 and A4 inserted into big Black connector into Pin1 and Pin2 and Connector E connecter to A5

6. Now you can install Control Module B and connect A6 to the module

Would you be willing to install mine? How much would you charge?

Thanks! I'm in San Jose.

The person who I bought my wheel from cut off connector A5 (the connector in which E plugs into). Now I have 2 Blue/Red wires and 2 Red wires on the end. Is there any way to tell which ones are which on up the harness?

After looking at the circuit diagram in post #132 above, it seems that both sets of wires are spliced to one another. So with that said...does it REALLY matter which is which?

EDIT: I figured out based on the pics that the previous seller took for me which pair was which.

Also, if you guys need new pins for the socket, the BMW dealer is your best bet. The part number for 1-pin is 61131393724. Theyre $0.66 apiece.

Not sure what is going on, but I don't seem to have the airbag release holes on the back or side of the wheel. Just the three hex screws holding the plastic together. Ideas?

Look harder, they are there.

They are just little slits in the plastic.

It was mentioned somewhere in this thread that it should be 46~47 ft-lb and not 75 ft-lb

The wheel is finally installed... 2013 M3 w DCT and it works flawlessly.

used Pin3 from JBE for power and PIN 6 for ground. The instructions otherwise were outstanding and i had zero issues with the install.

Took about 2 hours, and it works great, shift lights and all.

My 335i was a manual - it's a different wheel - in that it just doesn't have paddles.

I solved my problem. Got Bavarian Technic cable and erased the code. If you face the same problem and decide to go the same route, be sure to turn on hazard flashers, otherwise cable wont communicate!
Hey I unplugged the battery before installation but still got the same warning. Did you replace the cable or just a simple computer reset?

Thank you for this write-up, I installed the non-electronic wheel in my car today.

Some tips to help people out - some said that they had a really hard time removing the airbag. I did until I took a second to understand the mechanism retaining the air bag.

When you insert the driver in the slit, you're not just pushing against the back of the bag - you're engaging the wire retainer for the bag. See below. There is a dedicated channel in the stamping to receive the driver and engage the end of the wire retainer.

Notice that the wire retainer is pressed out wide. When you put tension on it with the screwdriver, it deflects inward and releases the airbag hook. There is one large hook per side.

When you engage these correctly, pulling the airbag should be a breeze.

One other thing to note - the steering wheel trim is held on by T20 screws, not T25 as indicated in the original post.

Same here, battery was disconnected before starting the install and when everything was put back I get a Passive restraint error aka airbag warning.

Any help?
