2011.5 E92 Service Visit
Brought in the E92 for its first service after the 1200 mile break in service. I have had the car since 10/11 and don't drive it too much. The car just hit 10,000 miles. Does anyone have any info as to what type of software updates will be uploaded to the car? We just got a new 2013 X3 and the iDrive system software (pertaining to phone calls) seems different then my car. When the phone rings in the X3 via Bluetooth it gives a faint beep unlike my M3 which scares the crap out of you when it suddenly rings. Would this potentially be something that's updated? Also are there performance software upgrades that may also be uploaded during service?

If you have a MY11.5 then chances are it already came loaded with the latest iDrive update, and you probably already have the 231E software that you're referring to.
And yeah, the phone ring in the M3 is incredibly loud, isn't it?

The volume can be adjusted down if it is too loud for you....

I have a 2011.75 and I have super old software. I have however updated the BT software myself (you can download it to USB drive) and it did NOT change anything I could notice.
If your ringer is too loud, turn the volume dial down to where you like it when its ringing...

Software updates aren't part of normal service, so even if newer versions change things, chances are you won't get them. Dealers only install software updates for free if a newer version is mentioned in a TSB as fixing a problem that you complain about. Otherwise, some dealers will do it if you pay, and others apparently won't do it even then because they're worried about bricking your car during an update and potentially having to replace a module, which they wouldn't pay for and which they obviously expect you would not to be willing to pay for.
And as others have said, the ring volume can be lowered. You just have to tweak the volume knob while the ring is happening; I don't think there's a volume slider in a menu anywhere just for the ring. Same goes for the volume of the navigation voice guidance. The USB software update is essentially a "driver" update that mostly fixed Bluetooth connectivity issues with certain phones. I've talked to people who have BMW Live enabled and it improved tethering connectivity there.

UPDATE:
The iDrive unit now functions in the same manner as the 2013 X3 so whatever update they did now makes my telephone incoming calls to "ping" instead of ring and the interface is slightly different then the previous version of the software I had. |
