Its funny
I frequent several car forums and everyone of them compares their cars to the current M3.
Mustang Forums Challenger forums Corvette forums Mercedes Forums Audi Forums VW Forums CTS-V forums Nismo forums They ALL compare their top of the lines against the M3 (which price wise is NOT BMW's top of the line) That tells me that the M3 is the benchmark that all others try to achieve or make better. I Love my M3!!!!

it's only natural for them to compare their cars to the M3 since it has received such universal praise among automotive journalists and has won virtually every comparison it has been in. not to mention, the 3 series has been on C&D's 10 Best list for more consecutive years than any other car in history.
at the same time though, there are a lot of M3 owners who try to compare their M3 to the Porsche 911, which seems stupid considering the 911 is a sports car and the M3 is a sporty luxury car, but the fact that the M3 can not only keep up with but in many instances beat the 911 (I'm talking 997.1 C2 and C2S and 997.2 C2) on the track speaks volumes about what an incredible job the M engineers did with the M3. |
