i would assume so cuz i'd think high speed = higher RPM = more protection engine needs from increased friction = oil burning?

My current mileage is 15,400kms, most of it (90 percent) at European highway/autobahn speeds between 85mph and 160mph.
At around 13,000kms, the oil indicator dropped for the first time from the full/center mark to quarter mark (after a couple of weeks of autobahn driving) and has remained there since. Other than the initial break in oil change, the car has not had nor needed any top ups. |

Thats not right at all...at that rate of oil consumption you should be able to see blue smoke coming out the exhaust. Its either a fault with the engine or the gauge.

Have you rechecked the oil. The gauge seems with some users to give strange results on long runs. On a 500 mile run mine said it needed a litre but the next day on a 40 mile drive was 1/2 full and has not shifted since.

Also, is your motor leaking oil anywhere?

I guess you meant 85km/h and 160km/h! Other than that it could make sense that at higher speeds and/or higher RPMs there is a higher Temp, and thus an increased gap between cylinder and piston... thus the engine burning more oil. May be some mechanical engineer will be able to help us on this one?

Mine didn't burn any between 80 and 100 mph for 760 miles with only 700 miles on the clock, which surprised me, to be honest. Of course that's according to the darn computer; a dipstick is the only way to precisely know. I bet is we were to put 5/20 like most cars, it'd burn oil like a MoFo .
Seriously, if you don't drive that aggressively, 1-qt every 2K miles is getting borderline unacceptable IMO. Talk to your dealer about doing an oil consumption test. Good luck. |

I bet its the sensor. My car had a faulty one. I changed the oil at break in and again at 5000km and will again at 12500km and then every 7500km thereafter. Clean oil just makes sense to me. I don't care about the expense, its an expensive car.
In between oil changes it hasn't burned a drop but after the last oil change it indicated a huge overfill and "return to the dealer immediately" so I sat around for 2 hours while they drained and measured the oil and confirmed it was the correct amount. They said drive it until they could get a new sensor in. After about 4 days of driving it corrected itself and didn't budge. Now the new sensor is in and it hasn't budged a bit. It reads one bar below the top line. I was diligent about break in and now drive the car relatively hard when the conditions permit. Most gear chamges are at about 5000 to 5500. I've been told by techs that the engines perform and last better when they are revved. That logic seems to be holding up for me so far. Next time you are in for service ask them to test the sensor.

Hi guys, only picked up my E90 M3 last weekend and am a little concerned about it's oil consumption?
The electronic dipstick showed full when I picked it up, but after a weeks driving it is now on half way mark. I have done about 300 ish miles and am running her in properly. The DCT box has caught me out a couple of times being in manual mode in first instead of auto and the car has gone above 5500RPM but not a lot past it and only for a second or so before I realised and shifted into 2nd. Other than that it has had moderate driving. Any views on this? Anyone experienced similar? |
