I figure it might be that the cable was a bit loose, but it does the same thing direct also. Anyone have an idea of whats going on?
Sorry, this is on an 08 M3.

They hand that task over to the unit installed in your car which in turn does it digitally, thus giving a more pristine representation of the original MP3/WAV's quality.

I can confirm that usb is much better than ipod from the experience in my home set-up. I have a yamaha 2700 receiver which has a USB port and a dedicated ipod dock. When playing the same file and switching between the two the USB sounds twice as good. I have one question though, does usb have bitrate limitation to 256 as the CD and DVD drives do?

max bitrate?

Hi all,

Has anyone successfully played mp3s with a bitrate of 320kbps through the ipod/usb interface with a USB stick? This is the bitrate I use to encode all of my CDs to mp3s (I would have tried this myself except that my car hasn't arrived yet). I hope I don't have to re-encode all of my CDs to a lower bitrate.

On a separate note, Amazon has the Corsair 16GB flash drive for $59.99 after rebate, which I will probably buy if anyone can help me confirm my bitrate question.

Thanks!

I cant confirm the bit rate, but all I know is that the Corsair 16g works!

I've been running MP3s encoded at 320k. Although I haven't ruled out the high bitrate as a potential cause for the hang-up in the head unit's recognition of the device...

The car manual says that bitrates over 256 may not play, but I have a number of 320 bitrate .mp3s and they play fine. It will play, mp3, aac, wmv, m4p, wav from my experience. Won't play ogg though.

So I've got one of these and it is working in the car, but the only thing I can access is the directory structure. All the other options - playlists, genres, artists, etc. are not highlighted, so I can't browse them. My drive structure is /music/artist/album. Any ideas?

Yes, I can do this, but can't select any of my m3u playlists.

Not being a heavy tech-junky, can someone explain one thing to me:

Will the functionality of the USB drive, when interfacing with the car systems, be the same as the functionality of the iPod? Will the song menus etc. all look/act the same on the car system?

Yes, same exact functionality (meaning structure of artist/song/album selection).

Wasn't that what post #14 was about? BTW, Newegg also has the 16Gb for $59.99 after $20 rebate now. Think I'll go for it.

Yes, but this does not work for me. Can create them and play them fine when the USB drive is plugged into my computer, but they don't show up in the car, either as files or through the "playlists" navigation button (idrive won't let me select).
