Browsing whilst at work...IT guys GTFIH

I full access on one of my "unregistered" computers at work that is not monitored by our company....HOWEVER, I am required to run a "backup" and submit a disc every month...
that being said..
what are they actually looking for?

the program they run is NovaBACKUP..
I browse with mozilla in private browsing that way i dont have to worry about deleting my history....and FWIW I run malawarebytes and CC cleaner once a week

any thoughts?

on occasion, i peruse the ITT You Fap Thread on slow friday afternoons hahahah

jaykay's right here.

The backup won't show anything, but if they're monitoring the traffic they already know what you're doing. It's too late lol

And they are monitoring traffic. And your emails. Everything you send/receive.

Do you work at a company?

Then they are monitoring

One wouldn't. There's no way to tell if they're watching traffic across their routers, but 99.999% of large companies do.

You could try TorBrowser, but it might raise even more suspicion. They won't know what site you're looking at, but they'll know you're using a Tor system to get there.

No way to tell for certain. JayKay's NOT right in that all companies monitor. at least not all the time. If you're at risk, they'll tell you. Otherwise don't be worried. You'll always get a warning first unless you do something TRULY bad.

The simple fact that you're connected to their internet is how you are monitored, everything goes through their servers, thus all traffic is logged and recorded (although not necessarily watched).

If you're doing anything that could bite you in the ass, learn how to tether your phone

I'd STRONGLY advise not using any bypassing sites/etc unless it's one off. A lot of traffic bouncing through the same URL/etc is MUCH more obvious than scattered other traffic through other sites.

Also to make sure the 'always watching' thing is clear. The large majority of the time, your individual traffic will NOT be watched unless you two things:
1. Call attention to yourself (lots of external links, or long periods of time on non work websites)
2. Go to websites that are BLATANTLY bad and will set off all sorts of stuff (i.e. www.hugeblackdicks.com)

If you're trying to cover your ass, again tether your phone, or constantly bounce through different sites and don't stick around for too long.

And again, unless you do something retarded they won't fire you on the spot, you'll get a warning first (and then REALLY be monitored).

yep common misconception with employees. The simple use of their internet (and thus their routers) means its all being logged

And if they really want to know what you are doing you can delete all the cookies you want, they can run forensics and retrieve enough to hang you. But if it gets that far you will know because you will have already been interviewed by HR and your security dept. will be taking your system off your desk as you speak......

You dont always get a warning. My IT buddy was fixing a computer via remote access. The guy was out to lunch. While he was waiting for some stuff to load he wandered through his emails and found an "off color" joke. He was canned by the end of the day.

That's why I tether sometimes.

And also am the one in charge of logging (we don't really monitor in real time). I think it would be interesting to see what my coworkers were doing on slow days, then again, I'm almost afraid.

You want the answer? Make friends with your IT people. ;-)

The reality of it is most likely that even if the traffic is logged, it is not monitored. IT teams have better stuff to do. Of course, if you work in a huge company, there could be a team dedicated to that. lol. I work in corporate IT and we do not monitor web traffic at all and we're a 500 million / year company.
