The New GTR full test 0-60 in 3.3 ticks!

This finally explains the GT-R’s suspicious 0-60-mph run and 11.6 at 120.9 mph performance, for a car that wighs 3,836-pound’s and has only a figuer of 473 horses.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...hotopanel..1.*

“Activating the GT-R's launch control is a matter of configuring its transmission, dynamics control and damping adjustments properly. The transmission and damping switches must both be set to the R mode and the VDC must be switched off completely by holding the VDC-R button down for a few seconds. Then it's just a matter of pinning the brake with your left foot and wooding the throttle with your right, not unlike the technique used to produce a tire-shredding burnout in that '85 Camaro you drove in high school.”

”The result, however, is quite different. The computer holds the engine at 4,500 rpm and waits for you to lift your left foot off the brake pedal. When you do the GT-R produces the most crushing acceleration of virtually any production car in the world. Our test was conducted on a fairly low-grip surface that produced lots of rear wheelspin before the GT-R's sophisticated all-wheel-drive system engaged the front wheels and it thundered down the track. Its 3.3-second 0-60-mph run and 11.6 at 120.9 mph performance make the GT-R the quickest car we've ever tested”.

“Leave the launch control off and the tranny in R mode, and the car is still sick quick. Sixty mph arrives in 4.0 seconds and the quarter-mile disappears in 12.3 seconds at 120.6 mph. All our testing was completed using manual shifting.”

I'm not doubting it, but looks like it's timed by those GPS box? Terrry did a 3.8 or something 0-60 with one of those

Sick!!!
But it ain't all about speed...Look wise it doesn't do much for me.
I'd take a 911 turbo over that any day of the week.

Cool. Great information. There are tons of folks here interested in talking about, learning about and arguing about the GT-R. Good post, technically it belongs in the other cars thread but like I said it fits in fine here as well. Given the serious lack of ANY new information on the M3 we are all a bit bored as well so talking about one of the other new and very exciting cars fits in as well.

It sounds like the launch control and DCT together are contributing to the cars fantastic peformance numbers. LC+AWD seems like the keys that are really getting it off the line so quickly. 3.3 s

These pieces of evidence do support the argument (contrary to much of my previous thoughts) that the car may not be under-rated in power. I'd say the jury is still out, but again this is good evidence pointing to a legit power rating.

The details about the LC are certainly relevant to the M3 since once it is equipped with the M-DCT it will have some sort of LC program. It very well could be that the US version of one or both cars will come with their LC "crippled" to some extent. Unleashing this kind of power so violently through the AWD system surely can not be all that healthy for the car, and given the penchant for stop light racing here in the US, a crippled LC may simply be required.

I'm definitely going to run some more simulations to see if I can improve the traction or other transmission parameters to get anywhere close to these times with CarTest. Should be interesting.

Well you have to remember that for years Nissan as all the other Japanese performance brands had to state their official output figures where 280ps though everyone knew this wasn't the case and all of them made much, much more.

Maybe Nissan are still stuck in the habit of under quoting the figures or like you said they always quote at the wheel to get around that silly ruling.

Either way this thing is as much a rival to the M3/C63/RS4 or IS-F as a Ferrari 612 is.

I say more it so we can get back to thinking the M3 is the greatest coupe below £60k.

I just wanted to point out that AWD + launch control typically only provide benefits in ET and from a dig in short races. You can see this by the about equal trap speed when it was run without launch control. It also highlights why 1/4 trap speed, not 0-60 and not 1/4 ET, is the preferred acceleration benchmark for many.

maybe Nissan underrated their gearbox, it's actually 18 speed vs. 6 speed

Exactly. 121 is serious business. I bet we'll end up seeing faster traps than that when individuals get hold of them. Even considering the car put down ~480 whp on a dynapak, the car is still putting more power to all 4 than a Z06 does to two.

Also - the car's owner looks like the guy on "Heroes." Look at the photos with the article.
