245/265 or 255/275 on 220M\'s

I want to go with the bigger 255/275 set-up for the additional traction benefit, but don't want squishy sidewalls when cornering on the track/auto-x/canyons. Do you guys recommend going with the OEM size or upgrading by 10 mm to the 255/275 set-up on the 220M's? I'm buying the Michelin PSS'.

I went with the re11 in stock sizes and am blown away. So far I've only used them for street driving and have about 400 miles on them.

The sidewall stiffness is very noticeable, and body roll is significantly reduced from my stock ps2 tires.

I'd highly recommend considering moving to an extreme performance tire like an re-11 or ad-08 if you are using these tires for some auto x and track days.

I feel like the re11s look better, are almost an inch wider on the wheel and ride nearly as well as my ps2s.

Highly recommended. Good luck in your search!

Based upon local member feedback and my driving style, I will definitely be going with the PSS'. I may consider the AD08's on a dedicated track setup in the future.
So, my question is whether going up by 10mm in tire size on the 8.5" and 9.5" 220M's will result in a squishy sidewall during aggressive driving.

I tried 255/275 PSS's on my 220m's but went back to the stock size's. Stock felt better to me. I'll betcha stock size PSS's will give you all the grip you could ask for. I would probably pick 255/275sizes for wider rims like the ZCP but on the 220m's, stock size is perfect to me.

Where did you buy the stock rear 265 tire? I have not been able to find anybody selling a PSS 265/35/19.

What tire pressures are you guys running on 255/275? Oem? Just curious as I've been trying out some different ones.

I'm thinking of getting the PSS 245/35/19 up front and the 275/35/19 in the rear (on 220m's) because my PS2 rear has a screw in it as I type this and I can't wait until December 22 for the 265 rear size to come out.

Why didn't you like the 255 (f) 275 (r) ? Was it the fronts or the rears you didn't like?

Any rubbing with the 245/275 setup? Do the tires look bad on the 220 rims? Anyone have pics? I'm trying to decide if I should wait until the 265s are in stock or just go 245/275. Thanks.

255/275 will offer no further traction to your car and will only likely feel less sharp for turn-in. As you mentioned side-walls are going to be higher and therefore signifigantly why turn-in is less. The zcp is a different story with bigger wheels but the stock 19s, bmw knew what they were doing. If more grip was to be had with bigger tires they would have used them. The mdm/dsc is made to work with the rolling diameter of the stock setup and even a slight change effects. this. Most of all you lose the sharp pinpoint turn in feel with bigger setup

Wow. I've been trying to ignore you on the forums but damn your responses are so stupid and misinforming. "255/275 will offer no further traction to your car and will only likely feel less sharp for turn-in." What are you talking about? Having wider tires in the rear gives the car significantly more grip than the 265's. If you had something stupid like 295 in the back and 245 in the front you'd have a lot of under/over steer (not sure which one I always forget). BMW knew what they were doing YES but that's because they have to keep a very WIDE variety of different people happy. Many people after running the OEM set-up and using the rubber up will instantly move to 255/275.

I'm gonna be running with 295/275 on my BBS FI rims, maybe I should go consult BMW if they think it's safe and if it's the best set-up.

It sounds like I should just stick to the stock sizes. I just don't want to wait until late December.

Well if you upgrade wheels to a bigger size you obviously need wider tires but at 295 you will be using a 30 sidewall and will probably be close to stock height. Just ignore me if you don't like my posts. I don't follow you around and comment on your posts. Its beginning to get wierd how you always find my posts and comment. creepster

I am currently running 255/35/19 F 295/30/19 R AD08's and I can say I have some mixed opinions...

The GOODS:
-the 255 fronts do offer A LOT more grip in the front, I can do things that I couldn't do with the stock 245's.
-the 295 rears are the perfect amount of grip in the back. The rear end just never looses grip.
-The Look AWESOME.. The sidewalls are dead squared and not stretched one bit. You will love the way the 295's look tucked under

The BAD:
-255 fronts rub at 3/4 turn on the back side of the inner liner
-255's loose the crispiness of turn in feel compared to the 245's
-295's rub on the rear part of the inner fender liner on hard dips

Heres what I recommend. If you need the front grip (you track, you auto-x, you go into the canyons EVERYDAY) then get 255/35/19 fronts. The only objective thing that I do not have a answer to is that maybe with a different tire up front you may not loose the crispiness of turn in feel with the 255's.

295's. YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS AT LEAST ONCE... The feel freaking AWESOME.

Personally, I think I will do 245/275 next time around. I'm sick of two things; One is the rubbing and two is the less crispy feel of the 255's. I personally don't like the look of the gts setup of 255/35/19 fronts and 285/30/19 rears so I strayed away from that.

My reason of upsizing was in two parts; The rears just didn't have enough grip. When I was going WOT on a incline on ramp on a fwy where the temps were around 55 degrees out, the rear would twich as if it were to loose patches of grip. Another reason why I didnt like the rears was because when i was in a turn and I would get on the throttle lightly, I felt like I was very limited to what I would be able to do with the car. The car was able to handle it, but I would feel the rear loosing patches of grip.

I had a 245/295 setup going into my first trackday at chuckwalla and this is where I could feel the extra grip in the rear. I got to appreciate this however the front 245 tire was SO limiting. Understeer was so easy to do with the 245's. So I upped to 255's and on the street they're amazing. I am convinced I do have a better setup but I don't want to make judgements until i get back on the track.

255/275 off the line felt slower, gearing different with the added roll diameter. Not as sharp steering response. Didn't dig it, went back to OEM size and life is good again. I bet most guys up the size for looks. I can understand guys tracking their M3's upping the width for corner grip, but on the street? You gotta try it to see how you like it, obviously opinions vary.
