Applying a decal...

I once had a friend in the UK install a 'Ring sticker on the back of my E46 M after returning from a cannonball style race through Europe.

He sprayed something on the trunk of my car, then applied the decal. It was full of bubbles when he applied it but he assured me the bubbles would go away after a day. They did.

Does anybody know what he could have sprayed on the trunk that eventually evaporated fully? Or perhaps the better question is this: if I wanted to apply a decal again on the back of my trunk, what's the best way to do it so there are no bubbles?

Your thoughts or comments are appreciated.

Cheers,
Tom

I've always used soapy water and then a squeegee. This also allows you to move the sticker somewhat when placed on the car. Works well.

Clay bar the surface then apply the decal if that's your question...

Wouldn't the soap interfere with the adhesive of the decal once it dried?

I guess so since you said it comes off easier. Would dish soap work?

No. The decal will only be movable before you squeegee the bubbles and soapy water out. Once dry, the decal should stay in place. It has been a few years since I have done this, so I googled "apply decal and soapy water" and here is one thing I found:

"The Soapy Water Secret
This is a major trick. Dan is spraying the surface with soapy water. That way the decal doesn't stick in place immediately. They can reposition it if necessary. It makes it possible to to squeegee out any wrinkles or bubbles. The soap and water dries in a few minutes and the decal is firmly affixed.Vincent says: "use 5 or 10% max liquid dish soap mixed with water"
