Ticket today for radar detector

driving in Loudoun County this morning when I passed a state trooper sitting on the side of the road finishing up with another car. I had maybe one other car close to me. As I climbed the hill I looked in the rear view mirror and saw him pulling out onto the road. I pulled my radar down from the dash and disconnected it - just in case he pulled up behind me at a light. For anyone not aware, Virginia is the lone backwards state that doesn't allow detectors. Anyway, sure enough, he pulls up behind me, flips the lights on and asks for my license, registration, and radar detector. I have the Passport 9500ix. Doesn't protect from Spectre, VG3 or VG4 so he obviously had one of those. The best part.....$40 fine (no points) AND $61 court processing fee, even though I'm mailing in the ticket........got to love the court system......but better than a ticket........

Still don't understand why the processing fees are so much....It's a little asinine to me, almost as if you have to pay them to take your money.

he saw the unit on your car? Or he had a detector to detect radar detectors?

i would not say VA is "backwards" in terms of speed enforcement. They're just very strict, I'm very careful driving here.

When I drive in Maryland however, I drive like all the other reckless Maryland drivers...you know, 90 mph on I-95, cutting people off within 6 inches at 90mph, no signals, talking on cell phones, tailgating, running red lights, street racing, 40mph in a school zone, hitting road-construction workers....etc.

VA is one of the places where detectors are illegal right?

He had a radar detector detector, though I didn't ask him which type of the ones listed in my original comments. Most likely he was using a Spectre 3 device.

VA is the only state where they are illegal. Also illegal in Washington DC.

Sorry man. I have heard that people with V1 detects the radar detector detector about a sec earlier than the person holding the radar detector detector detects. In any case, if not using a stealth radar detector, then all you can do is shut it off at the 1st beep and pray that the radar detector detector did not detect your radar detector.

i have always been curious how the detector detector actually works and how the troop can zero in on the proper car in a pack. i have lnown it for years.... but really never figured the entire tech logistics of it all. how can a v1 do it? i thought only jammers would do the trick.

I did some research on the topic today because I thought the 9500ix was invisible to RDD's. Ends up that they pretty much all "leak" a little except for a select few. I believe the Beltronics STI claims to not leak at all. Evidently, the trooper picks up a signal from my radar unit and in this case there was one other car near me so he picked the most logical car to have a detector. Had I put the radar in the glove box, I guess I could have said I have one but wasn't using it and he'd have to prove it was my car he picked up on his device. Since it's only a fine I just decided to fess up and pay the fine.

The funny thing is I had time to just "disconnect" the radar because I saw him from a good distance. I just didn't realize that mine "leaked". I thought the $500 I spent a while back was going to make me invisible to RDD's. Lesson learned......

I called Escort today to ask about options that don't leak and the Redline was mentioned. The problem, as they described it to me, is that with this device you don't get speed camera alerts or red light cameras which I find nice to have. So you sacrifice one thing for another. In the future I'll know to disconnect the device as soon as a LEO is in sight.

Time to whip out the headlight switch
And hook up a power bypass switch for the radar detector using the front fog light switch, for ultimate stealth

"What radar detector officer ?"

You slip it in between the drivers license and the registration, and hand them over to the cop

interesting... i have the 9500ix too... did not know they leaked... oddly enough, driving up the east coast often, VA is the only state I have been stopped in and let go too makes no sense...

Sorry you got nailed. Some day it will happen to me too. But the law is the law and a $40 ticket is, as you say, only a $40 ticket. Thanks for sharing the story. I'd heard that VA troopers had Specter (however you spell it) and I always wondered whether they would chase down a civilian with it. I had kinda hoped they were only looking for CDL drivers, especially out-of-town semis.

The good thing about the VA detector ban is it seems to slow the conversion to laser among the Commonwealth's LEOs (though as Kmarei will tell you, that doesn't extend to Fairfax County motors, so watch out for guys behind trees!).
