Made in China "Zhi Nuo" BMWs May Be Exported

UPDATE 4/15/13: According to Leftlanenews, a leaked document reveals that the official English name of this new joint brand is called "Zinoro" (which, not surprisingly, sounds like an English variation on "Zhi Nuo" (the Chinese name of the new brand)). The Zinoro models are expected to be green entry-level vehicles which will slot in under the MINI brand.

We recently reported on a new joint venture between BMW and China's Brilliance car company, called "Zhi Nuo" (which translates into "The Promise") [more details]. This new brand name will be introduced at the Shanghai auto show later this month and will build its cars in China upon the E90 3 Series and X1 platform. Under Chinese law, foreign automakers wishing to manufacture cars in China must partner with a domestic company.

Under the joint venture, BMW has the right to export cars produced under the co-brand. According to Autonews, BMW is now considering exporting the Zhi Nuo built models outside of China, and not just to emerging markets. Mature markets such as Europe have not been ruled out, says Ian Robertson, head of sales and marketing of BMW Group.

No specific target export markets have yet been announced, but it will be interesting to see if these Chinese produced cars indeed make it to leading markets such as Europe and/or North America.

It's seriously lame that China requires automakers to develop a new brand if they want to assemble cars in China under a partnership with a domestic company.

A Chinese made "German" car will not in my eyes hold up to the value and quality, and ultimate driving machine the BMW brand has portrayed.

But what is the market for the X3/5/6 like outside of the US? Are we the biggest consumer for these vehicles? Don't the majority Europeans drive more efficient & copact vehicles?

There is a big difference between American made and Chinese made.

Plus those cars are made for the American market.

Well a lot of people are still swearing the E90 is better than the F30 (having driven both I like both just for the record)

I don't see the problem with a cheaper sister brand E90 (like seat and skoda to VAG). It would be good to be able to get the dynamics in a cheaper package. As long as they don't make it hideous... and not switch to electric steering (that is what I liked least about the F30 I had)

Varied in UK, however a lot of people are buying SUVs or 'Chelsea Tractors' (as the envious refer to them).

China will milk this for all its worth... They will rape and pillage BMW for every last drawing and schematic and then start another god awful Chinese brand car to use all of their free designs they accumulated from BMW. How many American made TVs do you see out there? Oh yeah there is only one left and their name is Zenith. Once upon a time all TVs were designed and manufactured here in the good ole USA. It wasnt until the manufacturers got greedy and decided to save money by having Japan build them and now look what happened.

Nope. US X Plant exports are "more than 70%" of BMW production sales ...

according to the US trade.gov US vehicle Exports 2012 report. I'm guessing this was released mid 2012, BMW claims 192K exports for 2011 to 135 countries and states up to 300K exports expected by YE '12.

Pretty cool to have a World Class manufacturing facility 1.5hrs from me, not to mention the Performance Center =)

Unfortunately, it's a damned-if-you, damned-if-you-don't situation for all car manufacturers when it comes to dealing with China.

If BMW does (which it already did by entering into this co-branded joint venture) then they gain access to the Chinese market with domestically produced cars which will be cheaper to produce and transport/deliver. If they don't, then they get to protect their intellectual property, but lose out on gaining the advantages of having access to the huge Chinese market at lower costs.
