Okay, I would like to see that in writing.....
No official statements by BMW towards us dealers by now.

But if they do so, who-hoooo!!!!!!!

On the other hand, the 118d coupe is coming to the German market next year, but without the addititive used in US Diesels, so not the sdame car for sure.

BMW makes great engines. I'm curious to see what kind of power they can make with the four bangers.

+1 IMO as long as BMW keeps the performance and handling, these four cylinders will do great.

People in the US are obsessed with cylinder count and horsepower numbers. The higher, the better.. Who remembers Mazda 2.0 V6. Those cars sold a lot before people realized they were POS. Sure did get fooled by V6. You have to admit a lot of people in the US are very ignorant about cars and don't even know it. The assumption is V6 is more powerful that 4, and V8 is definitely more powerful than V6, all regardless of other factors, so manufacturers go and stuff in as many cylinders as they can get away with.

OT: But you hear the same crap about everything. Bigger = Better. I remember I was working on a project for one PD one time, and was amused by a ranging debate about 9mm vs .45. They wanted .45 but were issued 9mm. The argument was sort of like .45 = deader perp. I mean, 9mm = dead too, and I sure wouldn't want to get hit with it to try see what happens, all I know is I saw lots of stats, and 90% of the time some guy got nailed with 9mm he was dead and 100% of the time neutralized. I thought the purpose of the cops was to neutralize the threat not kill? The 9mm did the job 100% of the time, where .45 was kinda overboard. Yet the debate was heated. I think if .50 was light enough to lag around, they'd have been asking for that.

IMO bigger not always equals better. Biggie Mac not better than medium Mac. Biggie Mac = Fatter guy for sure, and I can't see how that is better. So back to engines, I am sure V8 not necessarily better than V6. A buddy of mine has a 540i and he was going on and on about how it will demolish my Tuned 335i as its only a puny 3.0 6cylinder compared to his big 4.0 V8. (Its old tech too, but I dared not go there..LOL) Needless to say, you know what happened.

I think what's being missed is weight reduction. BMW neglected this on the 1, maybe because with this engine and some weight savings we would walk all over every model they have!

That being said, with this change in direction, the N54 we have may very well be the best engine that's going to be available for a long time

Amen Brother, I'm glad I bought my 135i when I did, looks like I'll keep it for a long time.

This is good news in my opinion

People in the US have this obsession with insane horsepower and large displacement engines. I love my 335i, don't get me wrong, and BMW has made its name in the US recently due to high performance, but I'd love to see BMW bring the 320d here with the 204hp 2 liter diesel engine (from the 123d). Or even the 320Si that was a limited edition in Europe, with a high revving four cylinder. Power and fuel economy aren't a bad thing!! The 335d is a great first step, but they need to do more advertising, the way Audi is doing for the A3 and Q7 TDI. I'm actually replacing a 7 yr old Saab 9-5 wagon with a 2010 Jetta TDI wagon and can't wait to enjoy the diesel torque and efficiency. If BMW brought a diesel in the 3 series or 5 series wagon, I'd jump on that first, but they don't...

Diesel is now 30 cents cheaper than regular at many stations in LA now, and while it may not stay this way, it may start to drive people to realize that diesel is not the enemy. I think most Euro manufacturers should bring more diesel options here, and it will obviously help their MPG numbers.

also, we won't feel as guilty since we are also reducing carbon footprint...

Here in the UK, i have a 318i and the car is fantastic. I have only ever had four cylinder BMWs and although i would ideally love a six with its more wholesome exhaust note, that is really the only advantage for me and I can't justify the extra purchase price, fuel consumption and insurance costs for a noise. The pre LCI 318i has just about enough power and is a particularly smooth and relaxing drive, especially on the motorway - significantly better than many cars i have driven. I would rather have a lower powered BMW than another make with higher power - they are just better all round cars in my opinion (handling/styling/engineering).

Anyway, my point is this: Don't be sad that BMW could introduce four cylinders to your market, they are very excellent (and efficient) engines (the petrols/gasoline are made in the UK you know). Also, they are extremely unlikely to drop the sixes, at least for a fairly long while.

I had an E36 318 coupe which was a 4 cylinder. It was nice, but Id hate to go back to that again... How are they going to get 300+ horsepower out of a small 4 banger? Is it even possible?

return of 4-cyl is great news!

+1,000

I bought an M3 and it And I'd rather keep it - and its glorious S654 NA V8 - for fun

Next year I want to buy a 1er / 3er and will be keen to buy a very economical 4-cyl (would consider a diesel) for my 86 mi / day commute. I got to Germany nearly every year and am always envious at the wider array of engine choices there.

For the consumer, more choice is good! If I can't get what I want from BMW I will be looking elsewhere as I really want great fuel economy for my commuter.

All-in-all, this is great news! My 1st bmw was an e21 320i - wouldn't mind buying the modern equivalent.

i have had an 135i sold it after 3 months fed up with the turbo lag en limp mode on track.

I now have an M3 E90 fantastic machine. Throttle respons just awesome never saw that in a turbo engine.

Bring on M 4 cil turbo with 300hp no problem but

throttle response like atmo ///M
Can drive all day on track without limp mode and heating problems.
No turbo failures
No turbo lag.

If they can manage that in a one series ///M hatch or coupe with a weight of 1200kg. I am going for a test drive.

It is sad, not because they are selling 4 bangers,,, I have a 91 318is and love it. Its sad because they are being FORCED to sell them,,, there is a big difference. Not long and we will have co2 tax and congestion charges, its coming. All based on the theory of global warming, which is vastly overstated, and based on science that is not sound. Things will change and someday, maybe 40 years from now we will remember when we could actually speed if we wanted to, and we drove performance cars. There will be a time when we wont have the freedom to choose if we want to take a risk and gun it off the line. If I owned an e90 m3 I'd hold on to it, it will be the only v8 m3 model ever. But, hopefully fuel cell tech explodes and we will have performance and effeicincy.

I agree, I used to drive an E36 318is and loved it, the only time it felt down on power was in a drag race (my friend's mom's Honda Odyssey was quicker, for example) I'd go as far as saying my E90 is only 5% more fun in the twisties (despite being exponentially more fun in a straight line) than my E36 was.

I disagree with you guys saying it's sad that they're being forced to sell 4 cylinders, I believe the opposite is true. I actually don't even know which is more sad, the fact that car companies think you need a big engine to sell well in the United States or the fact that it actually seems to be true.

I don't think every car is going to reach this mpg number.

"The U.S. government is mandating fuel economy averages of 35.5 mpg by 2016"

So car manufactures can still have cars that will be less in terms of mpg, and those of you who want beasts of power you still got hope, Just a limited selection. So car manufactures can have two car with a mpg of 5, and 14 cars with a mpg of 40 and still be ok. just my 2 cents
