Stock Exhaust is Perfect

In my opinion the stock sound of this car really can't be beat. Unless you're trying to make it sound like you're driving a racecar all the time. The stock mufflers are nice and quiet when you're sitting there at idle and one you really get on it they do have a nice tone that is definitely heard by the people you pass by, even by you inside the car. I'm finding the BMW is a really hard car to improve on, not much you can really do to make it better than it is from the factory. I'd say they pretty much got it right on this car, and that reminds me why I was willing to pay $70k for it. I find the stock exhaust really fits the character of this car. Has a very nice tone when you get on it and want to feel like your racing. But this car also has the character of being a nice stylish (almost luxury) feel too. When you want to go out on a date for example it's the perfect car to pull up to a fancy place in without drawing too much attention like some sports cars or exotics do. Those situations the quietness of the stock mufflers is quite nice. I love how this car fits both worlds of luxury and performance.

this has been discussed before. and i have been looking for that thread with no luck. thanks for bringing it up.

i wanted to ask those who have after market if the "whine" sound disappeared with aftermarket exhaust or got overcome by the sound of the exhaust.

Well said. I fully agree. Based on the amount of technology and sensors, i believe that may performance mods may actually hurt performance.

well I had the Supersprint Sports on for about two days, I think they just covered up the whine sound. They sounded sick, but didn't fit my idea for the car should be.

Get a ride in a car with the Eisenmann Sport (not Race) if you can--it might change your mind. It's still quiet at idle and cruising, but IMO has a much more satisfying sound uinder acceleration. It still sound refined and classy, but with a little more authority. It is absolutely perfect.

It boils down to personal preference. The stock exhaust isn't bad at all. But there is room for improvement. It's heavy, and the big muffler shows underneath the rear bumper. To some people, this doesn't matter. I've heard many aftermarket exhausts for the M3, tried 2 different ones myself, and I would pick the sound of nearly all of them over stock. But that's just me.

I was actually surprised about the weight of it compared to the Supersprint Sports I had. Without putting them on a scale, when I picked up the stock muffler it wasn't nearly as heavy as I expected it to be, and didn't feel much different than picking up the two aftermarket mufflers at the same time. Wished I had a scale to put them on a really see the difference. But I can tell you performance wise from the drivers seat it's totally impossible to feel the difference in power or weight of the exhaust change.

Yeah it depends on the exhaust. My Remus checks in at about maybe just 1 pound lighter than OEM. My Vorsteiner titanium I can pick up with my pinky. Somewhere around 35+ pounds lighter than OEM.

I measured the stock muffler at 43.7# w/o tailpipes (noted in the Eisenmann thread)--that is about 6 lbs. lighter than the E46 unit. The weight is not a huge factor for me. Most of the Ti units are super expensive and loud.

I'm gonna hold out for a bit longer as I've gotten a bunch of PM's about them. It will go to the highest offer after another week or so unless I reach a deal with someone earlier.

What were you hoping for with the Supersprint ?

seems you like the stock ? so why fit an aftermarket unless you wanted some changes ?

I loved the kelleners on the M5 but went with the Eissenman Sport on the M3 as I wanted it a little quieter, very pleased as it sounds very classy with more bass at idle and a little more volume on full throttle but not too much. Part throttle is a lot more vocal and deeper.

Before it sounded a little too tame unless you nailed it IMO. It might be worth meeting up with someone with an Eissenman Sport if you wanted a little more volume but not too much ?

I didn't realize how much I liked stock until I changed it. I saw a youtube video of the supersprints and they sounded great so I got excited and ordered them. Don't get me wrong they sound really really good on the car. But after driving with them I decided I like the stock sound of this car. Like I said, I'm finding it very hard to improve on this car. BMW made a great car.

Good discussion. I think I am leaning toward sticking with stock but I would love the hear the E. Sport in person. The ultimate for me would be another idrive setting that opened a baffle in the exhaust for more low rpm noise. I certainly appreciate the aural comfort of the stock unit over my modded E36 M3. She still sings a beautiful song at high rpm. Another testament to what BMW achieved with the car.

Drove an E92 M3 with a Schnitzer exhaust and while the note at full bore was beautiful I can honestly say that at the motorway cruise speed of 65~75mph there was a booming which was awful and I certainly couldn't have lived with it.

Maybe my ears are too old and can't take the racket, bit like rape music.
