Worst state to live in for speeders?

All these ticket threads has me thinking, what's the worst state to live in for speeders? I'd say it'd fall into 2 categories:

1. $$$ amount for speeding (I've heard this is presently CA).
2. Other effects for speeding (license suspended, car impounded, etc).

PA's not bad, $$$ for speeding isn't bad, and worst side effects is the points system. Once you hit the 'top level' which I think is 6 points you're suspended, but the history of hitting that 6 point limit never, ever goes away. If you do it again 40 years later, you automatically get suspended for a month, and I think after that is even longer.

Who's got it the worst?

Umm I've heard it's VA because of

1) How thoroughly they enforce it
2) 55 is the max
3) penalties are harsh

I think that one was just speed traps though. I'm shooting for the whole kit and kaboodle (so I know which states to avoid moving to ).

Another plus from the speeding perspective in PA is they're pretty lax with the speeding, even with the economy. I've gone by PLENTY of cops at 7-10 over the speed limit, never even a scare.

i would have to say VA/FL/CA. all 3 are pretty bad.

VA probably has the toughest laws against speeding, CA probably has the highest fines, and FL has the most guerrilla enforcement tactics (mass speed traps run by airplane).

Definitely VA. Draconian laws and you can't even defend yourself with a detector. If you move to VA, just give up and buy a Prius.

i've always lived in florida and have never once seen that, nor have i seen the airplane thing. all i've come across have been the occasional cop with a radar gun and the useless LED speed street signs

Hawaii is pretty janky with their enforcement. So many civilian cars as cop cars.... You don't have any idea what to look out for because they could be driving absolutely anything.

New York is EXTREMELY expensive. Even after you pay the fines you get whacked with fees and surcharges.

+1 VA

Lived there till 4 years ago when I moved to SoCal and I can confirm. VA is a police state. It is not uncommon to go to jail for reckless driving granted first time offenders usually do not get the "book thrown at them" but if you are repeat offender there is a good chance. This got much worse when they automatically made 20+ over speed limit automatic reckless. (55 is the interstate highway speed limit throughout the state)

Plus right when I left they were giving extremely high fines (like thousands of dollars for speeding) before a potential challenge to the Supreme Court (cruel and unusal punishment) forced them to roll them back.. and then there was the drunk driving challenge that several lawyers were going to challenge the VA court system on the fact that people were considered guilty of drunk driving and the defendant had to prove themselves innocent rather than the other way around.

VA is a great place but the traffic laws and enforcement are ridiculous.

VA definitely one of the worst if not the worst

65 is the max on I-95, but most highways are 55.

and yes penalties are harsh since they just bumped up all the fines

My only gripe with fines in Cali is the damn administrative fee they tack on top of each ticket fine. It's nothing more than a tax on top of the taxes we already pay. I went to traffic court yesterday for a toll road violation, was in a service loaner had my transponder and it was not working and apparently had not worked for a long azz time accoridng to the toll roads, just hitting my account as a pay by plate. I take my account history and the letter from the toll roads to court, the referee reduces the fine from $225 to $5 dollars but charges $109 admin fee for the privlege of being there, in a public building, with public employees which are all paid for by my tax dollars. That's just fawking wrong. You can get most tickets reduced in court in Cali, not excessive speed etc. those have higher minimums but when you look at the damn chart in court and it says a $30 ticket costs $172 to pay that's the new new math to me.

Cool.

For some reason, thought that 55 was the max across the whole state. I guess I was misinformed.

Seriously. I got a $50 'no seat belt' ticket a few years back that came with a $120 "processing fee". I fail to understand how processing a ticket costs more than twice the fine itself, but who knows!

Virginia is $62.00 Processing fee no matter what ticket you get. Plus last year we had a time period where speeding tickets were like thousands and thousands of dollars.

Unhappy

I thought Ohio was very tough when I lived there--but that was 10 years ago. Got to pay my share!

IL just raised the minimum speeding fine and now the State Police are funded by fines. If they want to keep their jobs, they need to write tickets. Luckily it's so damn flat here that you can usually spot them if you're paying attention.

Still, it's way better here than most places I've been.
