Great summary. Now add the fact that there are only 1800 ///M Coupes made available in the USA and you've got a true winner (in my opinion):

"So there we have it. Putting the thorny issue of aesthetics to one side for a moment, here are two cars that are totally different in character. The BMW is instantly more fun. It reminds you why you like driving, but is also capable of taking a road apart in a monstrous fashion.

The Porsche rewards precision and commitment rather than show-boating, but always feels like a car designed right from the outset to be a missile. You will, ultimately, be faster in the more nimble Cayman S.

It's a better performance car. But you will have more fun in the Z4 because it's the more exciting driver's car. Head says Porsche, heart says Z4 M Coupe. Wallet says neither."

Have you driven a Cayman S?

They drive like they're on rails.

Amazing steering feel.

Incredible PDK.

Not as practical. Cayman should have more trunk space than Boxster though (darn, forgot to verify trunk space when I was there for the Cayman, but there isn't much in the Boxster. I would not give up the comfort and practicality of my 335i for it.

I don't know what the prices are in the States, but Cayman S's are same price as M3's here. M3 has the edge for me (best overall package), I recommend you try both.

My understanding is that all the >911 owners look down on the boxter/cayman/cayenne as imposters?

Those are suit wearing snobs that have reserved parking spaces at work. He's "Look at me" but can't drive it for sh$t. Any car guy that looks down on another car guy for what he is driving is a LOSER to begin with and should not be called a "car guy"

Totally agree!!! "Car Guy" should be at the top of the pyramid with brand, engine type/layout, etc. down the line......... and never an elitist attitude because we are lucky enough, or through hard work happen to be able to afford to drive our dream cars.

Z4M, Boxster S, Cayman S you can't lose with any of them. But...I would choose the verts in this group. They add an additional level of fun that can't be duplicated with a coupe.

I just replaced my '08 33i with a '12 Cayman S a week ago. It is my DD, about 12k/yr. It is so much more fun to drive. Not as much low end torque as the 335, but the PDK in sport mode is quick to respond to throttle inputs. The handling is amazing. Fit and finish are also superior to the 335. With the front and rear storage areas, it is fairly practical. I made a Costco run last week and got a huge package of TP, case of water and the weekly groceries in easily.
I have PASM and LSD as well as the electronics package and ventilated seats. Of course it was almost twice as expensive as the 335.
I drove a Z4 as a service loaner last year, and it's not even close to the Cayman. I also considered the M3, love the engine in it, but wanted something farther away from the 335. The M3, except for the limited range, would be another great choice for a DD, hard to pass on the last NA M.

So I was at a Porsche dealer checking out some of the cars and a sales rep and I started talking and he said they would take my Z4M as a trade in and basically straight across, so it got me thinking.

I looked up KW V3s which I would get and I couldnt find any pictures of Porsche Cayman S or R with magnesium blue Volk CE28s. Do they make them in 5x130? I am seriously leaning towards redrilling my Volks for the Porsche and shaving off some of the aggressive offset to the recommended +40 to +50.

I still want the Gallardo but this would be my time to test out Porsche.

The Cayman handles better and is noticeably more balanced. If you can, try and go for an 09. Anyone who says that the only Porsche they would own is a 911 hasn't driven the Cayman, and only cares about the badge on the front.

Even the new 991 has had it's engine moved closer to the middle of the car and further away from the rear axle.
