ZSG availability

Our BMW insider Scott just posted (over at the "other" board) that we will see ZSG in September in Frankfurt, BUT NOT IN THE M3 in Frankfurt. What he said was not in Frankfurt YET. Darn, always just a little bit too little information. It sounds really bad that we won't see it in Frankfurt - this is the official launch of the production car. This seems to cement it that we won't see ZSG for the production launch. I guess the real question is will we have to wait until the 2009 model year car to see ZSG. Man what a bunch of crap!!! ZSG BELONGS in the M3 and should launch in the M3. This is so disappointing.

As I said in another thread: There are some guys stating that the DSG will be available from March 08. This is the earliest IMO; maybe there's (another) delay then it could be September 08...

I have been wanting ot get something clarified reaaal badly lately...
Launch means the production is completed and the cars are hitting the showrooms right after Frankfurt right?
or is that when production begins officially?

Right, the cars should hit the showrooms right after Frankfurt! But a delay is always possible...

this IS bad news. i dont' want to have to wait some excruciatingly long period before i can get my M3 in DSG. (on the bright side though, i'm pretty damn pleased that it's almost a lock that they'll be offering DSG instead of SMG)

Seriously, is there anyone on this board besides myself that wants a true manual tranny?

And me. I suspect I'll bubble up to the #1 slot at my dealer, which is fine with me. ZSG might be a tad faster, but I'm willing to compromise a bit for more control and I love being fully involved in the driving experience. I don't have the time to develop into an F1 driver anyway, so I'm not going to be able to fully utilize the (marginal to me) advantage of ZSG.

And there's NO WAY ZSG owners will be anything other than guinea pigs for BMW. "Software" is not thier name, just motor. It took BMW forever to iron out software in the E60/E63 ///Ms, and SMG wasn't even new!

I love 3 pedals... in an Evo or a Porsche! M3 is more of a cruiser to me I do hope manufacturers continue to offer manuals for the rest of my lifetime. I do like having complete control, and it keeps my left calf in shape.

Just curious - how can you sleep with an inbound GT3?

6 speed manual > 6 speed SMG
7 speed DSG > 6 speed manual (assuming it is as good as Audi's).

Still, for driver involvement (and not all-out performance, lap times, etc) there is nothing like 3 pedals.

where does the 7 speed SMG found in the m5 and m6 fit into your little schematic?

I'd never have a robot change my gears. If that means I'll never own a CSL, then so-be-it.

That is if you are talking performance and technology and unless you just have to row your own gears.

on the subject of transmissions.... it's kind of sad how much worse the M5 performs in Manual than in SMG. i had such high hopes for that car in stick.

The problem with the manual M5 gearbox is because it is straight out of the 550i it is not attuned to the M5 it was a quick fix in order to please the American market .

Whilst the next M3 has a manual gearbox that has not been transplanted but developed from the conception.
The next M5 will also follow this route as will the next M6 and offer stand alone gearboxes rather than from it's regular 5er and 6er Coupe line.

Some members of the BMW board are quite furious on why they had to bow to demand and introduce the M5 manual which does nothing to better the current cars SMG but blemish the M5's mark free copybook .

As the M5 is marketed in Europe as being borne from BMW's F1 programme there is no plans to offer a manual gearbox in Europe . As BMW M Gmbh boss argued against the decison for a manual gearbox in the first place simply because it didnt need one .
