2008 e93 6MT clunk- driving me insane!

View My Video

Don't mind the revving. Only video I can find that has the clunk loud enough to hear. It happens when the car is at a dead stop and Begins moving foward. Neutral to 1st gear .. And sometimes with I'm a dead stop then shift into reverse as I let off the clutch it clunks. Car has 43,000 miles. What could it be?!

I dont believe mine does that either. Sometimes mine takes a little bit of 'effort' getting it into first when cold though.

It makes the noise at all times. Doesn't change whether the cars cold or warmed up.

Mine and many others does that. Just part of the character, don't believe it damages the transmission but it can be disconcerting.

While our car does exhibit many different mechanical noises associated with the drivetrain, I wouldn't say that particular "clunk" is "part of its character". It doesn't sound normal to me...none of the four 6MT e92's that I've owned have done this. I probably would take it in for a check-up...

Good luck and keep us posted with your findings OP!

Center support drive shaft bearing would be my guess. My e39 M5 did that. Under load it pings and clunks. Not saying it is exactly that but that would be my guess.

I'm going to check that out, it definitely only happens during a load change.

I agree good luck OP.

FYI, I've driven three manuals a 2008, 2009 and mine a 2011.75. All have exhibited this characteristic. Hence why I said many others, not all. But in finding common ground I agree I wish it didn't do that.

This may or may not be related but a few years ago I had a new clutch and flywheel installed in a corvette. When I got the car back it made the same noise as yours under the same circumstances. Turns out they had misaligned things when they put it back together and crushed the throw out bearing with the input shaft. Probably not related but the sound is very similar.

This sounds super familiar to me. On the rally cars I've run that was pretty much always somewhere along the drive shaft, mostly the u-joint or the centre bearing being worn.
Not a huge job to fix really.

Does the clunk happen when you put it into first or when you start to move forward after putting it into first from a stop?

I hope this isn't the case for you, but I was getting the same thing. It started and then got very bad within a day. It turned out to be a sheared off bolt which connected the diff to the subframe as I remember.

Sounds like a drive-shaft related noise. A u-joint perhaps.

Also, get the car up a lift and shift the thing back and forth from reverse to 1st while someone is under it to locate the offending part(s).
Definitely gonna give all that a shot. From just having someone stand outside the car it seems like it's coming from somewhere in the front half of the car if that makes any sense. But who knows..! Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Mine does that. Brought it over to a-spec and they said it is normal. Their mechanic says about 1/3 of the e92 M3's have that sound whenever the drivetrain loads and unloads. He's seen it both on brand new cars off the lot and used cars. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
