What type of BMW could beat or keep up with an RS6?

Hey guys, I just have a question I have to ask,

I recently just drove my friends Audi RS6 and it seems so much faster than his RS4 around 40 mph...

I was wondering what car does BMW make that matches up and competes well with the RS6- Or is the case that BMW will be coming out with something more competitive to that Car in the next year or two....

I am sure BMW has a better driving experience- but I guess my question mainly pertains to Acceleration and 0- 60 times.

All answers and comments to this question are very appreciated! I am a die hard BMW fan and I would hate to think that I would rather have that car as opposed to me being extremely happy owning an M3....

My opinion is the driving experience in a bimmer is unlike any other- I wouldnt want to trade it for any other european car unless it were a super car of course.

Thanks

If you're asking that quesiton, don't think the M3 is for you. The M3 will never be the fastest car around. You can buy a GT500 for a lot less money, and will be quicker and faster. Or a C6 Vette.

If you want the best combination of luxury, performance, and technology, and appreciate the benefits of a superb, high-revving NA DOHC V8 engine (sound, throttle response, smoothness, etc), then look no further than the M3.

M5 is faster and the RS6 is a beast. M3 is a quicker track car, with average performance car straight line speed

Add an SC to the M3 and it will take out 90% of the competition it comes across.
But simple bolt ons on most other cars will still destroy the M3 anyway. Its about the driver feel on this one

Are we talking about the same RS6 that's only available in Avant style? I thought that was a Europe only car?

i knew the rs6 was fast, didnt know it was that fast.
i would assume from just the numbers an m3 dct should be able to hold its own in acceleration, at least keep up respectively.
and m5-m6 should do a bit better.

You are correct that it's not sold in US, although there is both a sedan and wagon. I think maybe he is actually talking about the C5 RS6? Unless he visited this friend of his overseas. Or maybe he meant the C6 S6?

Or, this post is complete BS.

If my memory serves me well, I believe the car has something like 580hp and 450+ torque. It's a beast, that's for sure!

The RS6 Avant was available in the US. When I bought my wife's GLI in 05 we saw one in the showroom of the Audi dealer next tothe VW dealer. Sticker was $105K. Not sure what chassis code it was though.

That was the C5. The current one is the C6 and is not available here.

RS6 has the Lambo Gallardo V10 right? If you can afford it, best bet will be the new M5in a couple of years...Supposed to share engines with the X6M and with the numbers that the X6M is pushing, it should be pushing 575hp (I assume it will be tuned for a bit less torque and a bit more HP for the M5).

Having owned an e46 M3 and an RS6 at the same time I can give you a little perspective. I picked up the e90 as a compromise between the two cars.
  • The new M3 is significantly slower in "feel" compared to the RS6 mainly due to the RS6 having well in excess of 400 lb-ft of torque from 1800 to 5400 rpm.
  • A properly functioning RS6 rides pretty bad over bumps but feels great everywhre else.
  • The interior quality is superior to anything BMW has ever built.
  • On real roads the car handles fantastically. However, on the track it understeers like a 1970s Buick. Brakes are gigantically huge with 8 piston Brembo calipers in the front and are only good for 2 to 3 laps on most tracks.

The RS6 is a fantastic street car and a hideous track car. The M3 is an amazing track car and a damn nice street car. The e90 rides better than the RS6 or the older M3. It grips the track amazingly better than the e46; even a modded e46.

If I had to pick one of the three as a street only car, I would pick the RS6 with one caveat. The RS6 is insanely expensive to maintain. Pretty much anything in the engine compartment including O2 sensors will cost you in excess of $1k. Example: Flat rate for O2 sensor replacement is 30 hours. A good tech can do it in 8. 10 minutes and $45 on my F250.

This should give you an idea of how fast an RS6 is.

This is the only RS6 available today and only in Europe. It runs a twin turbo V10.

As you are in the US and can't get the new RS6 you are clearly talking about the original 4.2TT version.

Surprisingly quite a lot of cars are quicker, but what surprised be was that you felt the RS4 was slower, both in stock form be it Mk1 or the MK2 RS4 are actually quicker. It's not be much but when each is revved fully out the Mk2 RS4 has the upper hand.

Once you go beyond stock and start using the RS6 then really the sky is the limit, few European mainstream cars offer similar levels of grunt or go.

Even a mildly tuned RS6 will probably work with most modern kick ass cars like the CTS-V and M5v10.

Ditto the track comments. The M3 is a sports car. Some others are faster in a straight line but the M3 clubs them like baby seals on the track.

Most likely the OP is talking about the 2003 RS6 (C5), since the current one is not available in the US. The RS6 was only sold in one year in the US, the 2003 and is very rare. My brother has one. Its a twin turbo V8 with base 450 hp and 400 lbs of torque. Its a crazy ass car, even 6 years later a very fast/solid car. The main comparisions I get comparing the two:

- the RS6 feels like a tank if you drive the cars back to back. Yes, it has more power, and you definitely feel it at higher range, but this car is way over 4000 lbs - and feels it.
- it uses the old audi A6 body; so it has alot of weight up front, over the front wheels.
- As a Quattro car, it has the all wheel drive grip/feel and does not carry over the rear bias in quattro that Audi started putting into their sportier cars (ie RS4, R8, etc)

Unless you really like Audi's and want the uniqueness of the RS6, I would take the M3.

Next gen M5 I'm sure will be faster - might not make quite the same power but it will be lighter - the RS6 weighs around 4400lbs! If they can keep the next M5 at 4000lbs or lighter that will help...

Here in New Zealand I've seen quite a few of the new RS6 around - sedan is very nice with the LED lights.
