So it's better off just to buy the MS air filter alone huh...

Yep I'd suggest so. I think the plain and simple evidence is that the stock intake system is more than adequate for even a highly modified M3 once the restrictive stock filter is removed.
Just like you never go any bigger on an exhaust once you have reached the appropriate size for your application, I'd suggest the same logic should basically apply on the intake. Remember smaller intake pipes mean faster air speeds so it is all about achieving optimal flow capacity AND air speed... |

I was able to be present at the dyno to view the results during the runs. Due to a recent heatwave here in SoCal, we were greeted with a sweltering 101F temperature inside the shop, in which numbers will definitely improve as temperatures are cooler outside.
Here are some comparison shots of the Macht Schnell Charge Pipe vs the BMW stock piece. Here you can see where the restriction is virtually eliminated along with the "accordion" style ribs from the stock charge pipe. The included rubber couplers allow for proper engine movement. Comparison of Upper Intake Charge Pipe (OEM on left, Macht Schnell ICP on right): Comparison of lower charge pipe (Macht Schnell ICP on left, OEM on right): The stock airbox is awesome in the M3, but the dyno shows there is definitely some room for improvement for those looking to modify.

Not saying this will be the case with this product and in fact it could be the reverse, but it would be nice if vendors could provide this additional type of data as well. |

The AFE intake made good power on my E46 M3 as well, but it also made the car stall if you pushed the clutch in at 60 mph It was not the best design and IATs were pretty high at low speeds. I didn't like how it made the engine bog coming off the line or in traffic. |

Second, I think it'd be much more telling to do a dyno of a drop in filter and then the stage 2 intake, and show the weather conditions for each run (humidity and temp). These cars pull so much timing during hot weather, you're probably not getting very representative results. As many of us have indicated before, some simple Vbox runs on a flat road would be even more telling, because they accurately reflect what is going on during driving. Honestly, I can't see a tube with that large a cross section being any sort of restriction at all. |

Thats seems to e the issue.. Im happy spending the $100 for the 6/7 HP Gain. I already have the MS Filter. I cannt justify throwing away my perfectly good MS filter and its 7 Ponies for a new $500 Filter with 10 ponies.

AFE should have sent you out a new lid that would have solved this problem. I had no driveability issues with my car at all once the stalling issue was solved and it was on my car for almost 4 years, in fact the original owner still has it on the car with no issues and that was over 6 yrs. ago. So, this is a really mundane aspect... does this intake take away the buzzing resonance in the stock intake? When you stick an aftermarket filter on the stock intake, most people report a resonance at 3000-4000rpm. Does that go away with this?

Looks like most gains are due to the hi-flow filter.... |

If there was such a restriction why do you only pick up 3 hp over a filter alone?
