Are you sure the new design and old design are different because one has the coating and one does not?

But yes, excessive wear is not an objective call; that's when a friendly dealer bats for you .
I guess that either my sweat or my body oils are really acidic to the steering wheel and shifter leather. I use driving gloves now...

However, the button trim started peeling in areas that I seldom touch and the airbag was showing the cut off line on the surface since the car was new, so both were really defect warranty replacements.

Now I always wash my hands before driving if I've put on sunscreen (or on my kids), which is often in socal.
Sunscreen is rough on plastics, on my boat if you just touch the clear plastic windows (stratoglass its called) it destroys the spot you touch permanently. I guess no one uses sunscreen on a boat so that was a great choice of materials lol.

My wife is into the moisturizer thing and has wrecked her Jeep interior, all the high use 'soft touch' surfaces are disintegrating. Everyplace she has touched the carbon/leather trim in the M3 has turned white and it a PITA to clean, I have no idea what those hand lotions have in them but they are rough on everything.

That's good to know. I checked my steering wheel and its definitely not rubber coated which is fine by me. Would hate to deal with that.

doesn't grip
i assume its a newer design
but i know for a fact they are different

I just went and looked at my 2011 and if you are talking about the face of the steering wheel spokes around the buttons mine is hard plastic. It is similar color but its not the same as the console around the iDrive or the door by the window switches which feel like they are rubber coated.

If you are talking about the plastic that starts to peel and feels like very thin rubber, I had them replace it under warranty. Once it starts peeling, underneath looks starts looking glossy....so it looks very messy.

didn't want to say this until it happened
didn't want to jinx it
i spoke to my SA and told her instead of you guys paying $800 for a replacement M3 steering wheel. and me paying $660 for the Performance steering wheel (PSW), why don't you just replace my scratched OEM steering wheel with the PSW?
she said sure

and sure enough, 4 days later , when they got the PSW

Dealer is replacing mine under warranty, and looking at the throbbing noise from the brakes under heavy braking, and looking at the window drop on my JCW, and the intermittent engine fault light on my JCW.

Gotta love BMW. 2 cars in at the same time. I wonder what courtesy car they will give me? Better not have a d in the model designation.

I am having the exact same problem on my 335! I first saw a small bubble on the steering wheel that turned into a tear. Dealer says its not covered. That small bubble has returned and torn several times now. I have also started to see this on the inside of the door handle as well.

Also, has anyone notice a wear spot on the left edge of the seat side bolster? My seat belt rubs on the seat and is wearing the leather down.

I have no idea why they wont fix it under the 4/50, even though its cosmetic if its peeling with no obvious damage that would mean the materials are defective. Generally after a year cosmetic stuff is always frowned on under warranty but a lot has to do with the dealer.

Before I sold my last Corvette in it had about 3 months and 2,000 miles left on the 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty. I had the seat covers replaced, on the drivers side, leather was rubbing through on the bolster and the lower part was cracking. I had the targa roof replaced, the plastic was crazed, fully functional but looked bad (1,000.00 part). The carbon fiber radio surround was turning yellow and cracking and they replaced that too (600.00 part), all under warranty.

I'd be a little disappointed if BMW didnt replace something that you look at all the time when driving, unless it was obviously abused or damaged.

I don't see anything 'rubber-coated' on the areas mentioned, so it's probably a film over the hard plastic. Yeah, those wear claims are always at the discretion of dealers. Good luck.

I have had this issue on my last 330. I noticed this started happening when I switched hand lotions....the specific brand was Vaseline for Men.

So I agree with ChrisK....hand lotion will do it. In the M, although I no longer use Vaseline for Men, I focus on touching only the buttons and not the area around them.
