Why is the E9X M3 so bad on gas?
Just to compare against over European naturally aspirated V8's:
M3: 4.0L 414hp 3,700 lbs. 14/20 MPG Maserati Gran Turismo: 4.7L 454hp 4,145lbs 13/21 MPG Audi RS5: 4.2L 450 hp 4,009 lbs. 16/23 MPG Panamera S: 4.8L 400hp 3,968 lbs. 16/24 MPG Jaguar XK: 4.2L 450hp 4,009 lbs. 16/23 MPG R8: 4.2L 430hp 3,968lbs. 16/24 MPG Range Rover: 5.0L 375hp 4,850 lbs. 14/20 MPG Thoughts? |

Well, 8 individual throttle bodies and an 8,400 rpm redline would be my extremely unprofessional guess. I actually think the highway figure is underrated IMO.

Not an engineer can never figured this one out why the mileage is so low?

i think it has to do with gear ratios (for highway MPGs)..i'm not an expert though and don't really know.

Gearing is numerically high compared to other cars.
Upshift at 2,000 RPM (instead of 3,000 or 4,000) and you will see much better mileage.

because the s65 doesnt let you get out of the throttle. once you take it deep to 8K land you want to every shift.

I assume it is the very aggressive gearing.
High revving and "small motor" aren't really good "excuses" IMHO. Just look at all the high revving small Honda VTEC motors

After driving my moms 2007 camry 4 banger which sits 2300k rpms, the M3 at 80mph , it's sitting at 3k rpms. wth? Why is that??I thought the M3 would be at like 2-2.5k rpms at 80mph in 7th gear.

Quiet simple: because M3 can rev up to 8300 rpm. If it did 80 mph at 2k rpm it would have to reach 250 miles at redline lol

All answers logical - how we drive, gearing, etc...
The truth is that the car is designed to be DRIVEN hard and not for MPG - yes it is a consideration but the truth is an M car is for a special driver - and I'm just thankful I get double digits with how I drive mine! |

The M3 achieves better mileage than the Toyota Prius:
Proof: DETAILS BEGIN AT 3 min : 25 seconds - V .

You guys are missing the main reason. Direct injection. Gearing has something to do with it too, obviously. A seventh gear would help too, ie Porsche, which also has DI.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."
