Cheers,

CSL
That is exactly what I was trying to explain to swamp when I said all DCT transmissions shift between 140~200ms, that is the time between flicking the paddle and the other gear engaging, the exact shift between the two gears is in the very low milliseconds.

My car was in at the dealers on Friday with a unrelated issue. There was no DCT update available at that time, unless BMW are only pushing the update out to certain cars.

Normally, when the car is checked in at a BMW center, via your key fob, any required service actions including required software updates are known at that time.

My car (finally) made it state-side on Saturday, 26 July. It's at VPC in Port Hueneme now and the dealer says I could have it within a week (needs transport from Port Hueneme to San Francisco). I hope the software update was installed on my car at the VPC. Keeping my fingers crossed that the M-DCT experience will be trouble-free for me.

As soon as I get my vehicle I will play around with it and report back. It's at
the dealer right now and they're doing last prepping.

BTW...for those of you that complained about the gear box not wanting to
downshift, could it be that u tried it when the revs were fairly high? If it
was then the logic on the dual clutch tranny should not allow you to shift
down as it would over-rev the engine and that at a wrong vehicle speed.

For instance, a Ferrari F430 will automatically shift down if you are in a
certain band of speed to get torque to the wheels. Perhaps, some folks
here are experiencing the same behavior with the DCT.

With regards to reversing, the manual states that you have to be at a
complete halt before you can do this.

Keep u posted...

You can shift into 1st while still rolling slightly backwards and it will slip in the clutch just as if you were driving a regular manual

I believe is point on. When u drive either an SMG or DCT, you do NOT need to take your
foot of the gas pedal. U just keep it pressed. Same thing with the Ferrari F430, too....there the shift change time are around 100ms.

be careful!

bmw manhattan managers are full of shit! when my car arrived, my CA first said i can pick up thursday, and then wedesday night she told me it won't be available until friday because there are some "computer problems".

well, i showed up on thursday regardless. when i walked in, the manager finally told me that my front bumper is being repainted... there are no 'computer problems' at all! (the management didn't even tell my CA the truth) had i shown up friday, they wouldn't have said anything about the bumper....

anyway, just fyi... hope your car is in good shape!

Just like the different reports on average MPG.

The SMG in my 2007 335 has a delay that comes and goes. It has been getting worse with more miles.

My M3 is due to arrive in the next three weeks. I was notified that there was an upgrade being performed on the DCT in my car that will also be present in the initial production of MY2009 cars.

I'll let you all know my DCT impression in the second week of August when my car arrives.

I didn't noticed any lag or downshift problem when I took delivery of my car early this month in Germany (ED). The car is still on the ship but scheduled to arrive in NY/NJ at the end of this month. Hoping that I can get it within the first or second week of August. By that time, I will confirm and verify with my CA if any DCT software upgrade was done on the car.

No offense, and I'm sorry for your troubles, but what does that post have anything to do with the topic being discussed in this thread?

They don't, unfortunately he was either told something by a SA and believed it, or he just doesn't know what automatic he is driving around.

No offense, but hate how people just throw terms, info and claims without knowing what they are talking about........

The OP ordered his car from the same dealer, Manhattan BMW, which used the same excuse (computer problems/software update) for why the car was delayed at the VPC instead of admitting that the car was damaged when it was off-loaded.

It is surprisingly common for the front spoilers to be damaged when the cars are off-loaded at the port. Many dealers will not say anything to the customer and will simply come up with an excuse for the delay. Long story short, there may be no such software upgrade.

Oh, I see.......my bad, didn't see where the comment was coming from. Makes perfect sense now.

335 does not have SMG, it's actually automatic with a tiptronic and paddles on the steering wheel, SMG and DCT are reserved for M cars only.

the old E46 330Ci had SSG (Sports Sequential Gearbox) which was based on SMG, but stripped down and cheaper

Not true.

The SMG was offered in the non-M E60 5-series and E63/E64 6-series.

Also the DCT will be offered in other non-M BMW models soon.

Pic below is 2006 650i, with SMG.

interesting. but i have a feeling it's a watered down version SMG, and not the full blasted SMG from the M models.

Actually, I was told by the dealer that the car was SMG. The dealer also used the term for the DCT for the first few months.

My comment was based on another post about DCT lag and how great the shifting was in the 335 referring to the tranny as SMG. However, my 335 is unpredictable. Some days it shifts very smooth, other days there is a lag.

Either way, I will have my M3 with DCT (correct terminology) in less than two weeks and the 335 will be history.
