Plus, anytime you can get a 12 second rwd street car on street tires below 1400 when multiplying trap speed times E.T., you are getting pretty much all the car can get, ET-wise. 1400 or below, you're fine. Above 1400, you've got work to do before going for more power. Pretty damned good for a car that is not especially known for astounding quarter miles. Hats off. Bruce |

4-Banger Performance Value

Now that's one very slippery, four-banger slope! For $14K, you could just buy a brand-new, stock 2012 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, with a warranty. Take it to the dragstrip and run sub-10-seconds @ 140+ mph, all-day-long. Then (assuming you can ride), take it to a road-course and run -5 seconds per lap faster than the modded STi, all-day-long.... Bang-for-the-buck, indeed! |

All I have to say is I have a lot of friends with both STi's and Evos, quite a few went from a STi to and evo and all love the track.. I have never owned a STi but they tell me the Evo X is the better car hands down!
Im selling my built X 550whp-430tq (Pump gas) for a e92! so we will see how that goes raced a modded e92 on the hwy last yr and I was running only 400whp-340tq and it was some what close, but still pulled on the M3 in 4th-5th but really thats not my goal for the M3 to make it quick.. im sure its quick enough and I find it very classy esp compared to my X |

Agreed. Plus Subaru look horrible at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day so I would pass and never own one. They are an under $30k car, regardless.

Former IWSTI member here
08 sti, intake, uppipe, downpipe, equal length headers, exhaust, proper dyno tune, 265s all around with advan RZ rims. With traffic light street racing e9xs dont stand a chance. So if he had similar mods, you woulda lost. Maybe he had detonation or wasnt tuned yet and his car was pulling timing. Or maybe not broken into yet? Lol. But id rather be more comfortable in my E90M

You can however compare cars plus mods when you look at a set spend versus what you get. For instance at 40k what platform plus mods gets me the most performance? Doesn't matter if its 35 car and 5 mods or 20 car 20 mods, just where are my dollars best spent for the package at a specific total cost. This is the only real way you can make an objective comparison of a car and mods versus another. |

theres a 2011 sti limited sitting in my drive way that my girl drives, only mods are catless invidia exhaust and street tune, against a stock e9x m3, its pulled on plenty, even destroy the e46 m3 by about 4-5 cars...
so ill give credit where credit is due, its a quick car, over 80-100 no way itll keep up, it dies off to fast, but under that and off the line, easily has the m3 beat |

Another former STi owner to M3 sedan.
2007 Sti Limited: 3071 stock location turbo, full race header, ohlins (fps) suspension, pump gas 91 octane tune, spearco top mount intercooler, all supporting mods for turbo swap.. 2011 e90 Comp DCT: Akra evo with delete-r. I definitely miss the subie.. especially the torque and fun factor around town. Also miss manual, but think I'd still decide to purchase the M again and with DCT. From what I can tell, I will be even happier once I get the M on the track. Obviously the M is nicer, sounds better (with akra (although my STi exhaust exhaust setup sounded great)), wife can drive it- possible negative, better looking... Knowing what I know after owning both, I'd still sell the STi for the M and fork out the extra $ for the e90. Straight-line acceleration comparison: When I run my buddy in his e46 (stock), he is much closer to the e90 than he was to the STi. I was devastated the first time we ran each other in the Ms and I barely pulled him (this was on stock exhaust- haven't run since akra but doubt it'll make a drastic change). Based on 2nd gear rolls- running out 2nd, or 2nd and 3rd, or sometimes 2nd 3rd and part of 4th gear but we always shut it down before getting crazy speeds. Handling: Think my STi had one of the best setups but too hard to compare without #s/times which I don't have. For comfort M3 has the advantage. For performance I'd guess stock M3 vs stock STi- M3 wins. Most likely even better than my STi with Ohlins, sway bars, 18x9's w/ 255s on all 4 wheels.. but can't say for sure. Mods: Have always gained satisfaction in modding my cars STi- Somewhat affordable, did them all myself, fairly easy if mechanically inline. Increased owner sense of value/attachment. M3- I just spent how much on an exhaust??? Probably won't do too much more but tempted to supercharge down the road despite telling myself I would never go forced induction on a factory NA car again. Never cared about warranties in the past, but can't afford to fix the M3 if something breaks out of warranty. Can't go wrong with either car |
