Nitto NT05s or another set of RE-11s
Hey guys, its time to get a new set of street tires and was wondering if I could get some opinions from anyone with the NT05s. I'll search the forum as well, but I'm a lazy cuss and welcome any opinions on the tires.
I currently have the Bridgestone RE-11s and really like them, but I wouldn't mind something a bit more aggressive for the street. Opinions on other 'aggressive' street tires are also welcome. The M3 is my DD and I live in Houston, Texas so winter is not an issue. Thanks, JC

NT05's = cheaper & a little stickier then RE11's
NT01's if you want the ultimate in street/track performance = cheaper, stickier but less treadwear compared to NT05's and RE11's = 100 vs. 140 |

NT-05 is priced well and makes a good summer tire. Dunlop Z1 is extremely popular and priced very close and is generally my preference. The RE-11 is already a fantastic tire, and I'm not 100% up to date on my specs but I'm pretty sure it's a little better then the NT-05. I would only make a switch like that for the cost savings.
I never consider the harshness of a tire when I'm shopping since I have a dedicated weekend/track car, but it maybe something that's more important to you.. |

NT01 is not recommended for the street at all. I drive to and from the track on it all the time, but if you're caught in the rain on the street, your screwed. as the tire wears the rain groves go away and at it's mid life will look exactly like a hoosier A6/R6. Even at full tread the groves don't do you much good on the street.

Thanks for the advice
Will a 275/30-19 fit on the back OEM 19s? I'm having trouble finding this tire in a 265/35-19.

I dont drive in the rain = lucky enough to live in SoCal, but one time I was forced to drive on them in drizzle -- it was tough and slow - and not recommended. But if you have a 2nd car for the rain - and you want the ultimate grip for a part-time track/street 'summer' car then NT01's all the way (or R1's as in my case) My R1's would last me approx. 8 Track events and 6 months (6k miles) of street use. R-Comps CAN be used on the street = it is an expensive way to go - but no street tires grip better. Rain is for SUV's -- my Sports Cars have 'never' seen it. Here's a financial comparo between PS2's and NT01's - $350 vs. $250 - PS2's will last 1 year for both track and street duty (but you will lack grip at the track). - NT01's will last less then 1 year for both track and street duty (and you will grip great on and off the track) - to run both sets you have to spend twice the money on tires AND get another set of wheels. So the average track junkie that changes tires will spend $1400 on street tires every 2 years and $1000 on Track tires every year. Thats $1700 per year (not counting the extra expense of extra wheels) So I spend $2000 per year and run stickier R-Comps YEAR ROUND on and off the streets. $300 more = but I have $10,000 more fun and didnt spend the extra $1500-$2500 on wheels. |

I have run both NT05s and RE-11 on both the street and track. I now run track dedicated r-comps. For the street the RE-11s are much better. More compliant, quiter better wearing, better in the wet. The NT05s are more performance oriented, they do have better turn in responce (must be the side wall cause the ride suffers), but I think the RE-11s have better initial grip. The NT05s do have more grip with some heat in them but if these are a street only tire I would stay with the RE11s, I know I will be.

^I'm looking for some sticky street tires that I can use at the track if I don't feel like changing the wheels or have to drive long distance to get there.

If you want an uncompromising performance tire then NT05s. But the noise and the rough ride were too much for me. Especially when the RE-11s provide performance that was nearly as good. |

Exactly what I was getting at. The noise with the NT-05 will get even worse as it wears. But if you don't care, then go for it. You'll definitely be saving money, and most everyone is happy with them. When comparing tires like this you have to ask yourself what the priority is. If the ride comfort is not that high on your list (and it's not going to be that much worse) then go for the NT-05's.

If your dead set on a specific size then you're always going to be limited. I generally pick the model tire I want to run, and then figure out what size I need to squeeze that specific tire on to my car because "tire sizing" is not all that accurate anyway. Tread width and overall width vary from every make, and a narrower or wider size can accomplish the same thing depending on the situation. |

I always thought the RE-11's and AD08's both gripped better than the NT-05s. But I guess the NT-05's are better in the dry (not sure about wet) than the RE-11's?

JC, how about the Potenza RE050A Pole Position, or Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08. Both are on Tire Rack in 245/35 & 275/30 sizes which will fit the OEM 19s.
