Extended Powertrain Warranty Question
I'm a little confused by the extended powertrain warranty. What exactly is covered?
What parts of the DCT are covered? Thanks! |

When I get an extended warranty by a dealer, lets say located in MD, would it be valid in all BMW dealers in North America or just that dealer?

I'm guessing that the prices vary and are negotiable.
You need to get the gold coverage for the brakes? Maybe just power train plus for the transmission. Last edited by AshyLarryMP; 01-27-2013 at 10:50 PM.. |

The extended warranty is from BMW, not the dealer even though he is the one who sells it to you. So to answer your specific question, yes the extended warranty is covered anywhere in the US. |

I bought an M3 two weeks ago and I went with BMW coverage and my dealer don't have any third part company that will sale the policy for M3, there for I have no other choice by going with BMW for extend warranty 7 years/100K miles $50 deductible.

Interestingly, my SA highly recommended AGAINST the powertrain + warranty for my newly purchased USED m3. And he knows I'm looking at buying a warranty through Steve Thomas BMW, so he wasn't really trying to push me into buying from them.
He basically said there is very little chance of engine or DCT issues with these cars...it's the other stuff...the electrical gremlins, etc, that need covering...which is why I'm going to have to go third party, as the Gold or Platinum packages are just insanely expensive for me... :-/ |

The only problem with the extended warranties that I've experienced is, if you don't keep the car through the extended warranty period, you lose the money you spent on it. The extended warranty stays with the vehicle; this being the BMW Extended Protection warranty. Unlike the wheel/tire protection package if you're familiar with it. So, if you trade the vehicle at 55,000 miles, you basically lose the money you paid for the extended warranty. This sucks. With the wheel/tire protection pack, if you trade the car before the expiration of that particular package, you get a prorated amount back. If you plan to keep your car up to 100,000 miles, it's worth it. If not, then you're just giving an extended warranty to someone else at your cost. Same goes for the maintenance package. - Pic as promised...

Not what BMW NA told me. I kicked a lot of boxes and cussed at the finance manager then to several people on the phone at BMW NA. They don't give refunds. It's actually written on the back of the paperwork when you sign it. Maintenance and Warranty upgrades stay with the vehicle. I'll post a pic of the documentation when I get home.

You guys are all over the map on this. Be careful.
BMW NA sells (through any BMW dealer) only three types of "Extended Vehicle Protection" coverages - GOLD, PLATINUM, POWERTRAIN PLUS (see dsm918's post above) - and each coverage category is offered in four different year/mileage combinations. Only BMW NA EVP's guarantee genuine BMW parts at an authorized BMW repair facility. And digging into the details on the Powertrain Plus on M-DCT does reveal that everything on an M-DCT transmission is covered except clutches. ANY BMW dealer can sell a BMW NA EVP package to anyone (I live in Mississippi and, after getting several quotes, bought mine recently from Steve Thomas BMW in California) and they are contracted directly with BMW NA. And the BMW NA EVP plan is transferable for a small fee as long as it is a private party (not through a dealer) sale. There are also LOTS of other companies that sell so-called third party Extended Warranties. ANY BMW dealer can sell these as well - and many do since they get a great $ mark-up. These extended warranties will rarely explicitly mention M-DCT since they are written in general-ise for cars that do not have an M-DCT. This would be an area where I would personally be very careful come claim time. I would also be careful with these warranties on an ///M car in general where non BMW parts/non BMW service might be mandated. Check the claim process carefully. And transferability will be per each plan's terms and conditions. In the end, I chose a BMW NA EVP plan (Powertrain Plus, 7 year/70,000 mile) from Steve Thomas and sleep well at night. Good luck. |

Generally speaking RUN don't walk away from 3rd party warranties. What a PITA. So far, especially United Car Care. OMG. Don't get me started.
The ones out there like EasyCare may be exceptions. But in general, unless it's underwritten by a major automotive company = RUN RUN RUN! So far, BMW Powertrain Plus has really paid dividends on our 335i - that car blew through 4 injectors, which is peachy on its own, but they also polluted the catalytic converter due to running rich. That in turn blew up and sent CC crap downstream. So - let's see $3k for PowerTrain plus... 3 service visits replacing 4 injectors $3500, 2 catalytic converters $2000, one performance exhaust $1800. yea, it paid for itself. |
