The M3 was at another dealership before it was listed on ebay. The listed price was $27,500, and they were willing to go down to $26,000. I passed because the car isn't worth that much to me.

Is $29k worth the driving excitement of driving an M3? Hells yea. If I drove a Prius everyday, i would likely commit suicide by 50k miles....the pace you have to drive at to get the best mpg is maddening.
You might be surprised.

I can't speak for the Prius, but the new Ford C-Max is actually pretty nice. Of course it's not a fast car, but you're not buying it for the speed. When I drive my girl's C-Max, I am able to maintain anywhere between 43 and 46 MPG average, while still going 5-10 over the speed limit (except on some major highways where the limit is 70). As long as you're not going over 65 for too long, which in my area the limits are usually 55, then you're golden. The money is in the braking, which charges the battery. The more charge the battery has, the better it runs. If you can really drag out your braking and get a good score (yes, the car shows you a brake score), then you can actually drive very efficiently even at higher speeds. On some shorter trips around town, I've gotten as high as 51 MPG in that thing (according to the computer). But we live at least 20 minutes away from shopping centers, so most trips aren't short for us.

Of course you can't slam on the gas and screech to a halt when you brake, then you'll get more like ~30 MPG (which is still pretty decent compared to our cars). Bottom line is that I can still exceed the speed limits in most areas in the hybrid, and still get 45+ MPG. Not sure about the Prius though

Agreed, but the Prius is great at being an appliance... Money saved driving the Prius as a commuter means less maintenance costs on the M3, less gas spent, less wear and tear on the M3.

The fact that the Prius is an appliance I wouldn't get as angry if a door got dinged, or someone used the Prius bumpers to park by Braille, or if I curbed a rim... Takes all the stress out of enjoying the M3 and you end up enjoying the m3 even more afterwards on the weekends

Also I just found out there is a performance package on the Prius which is kinda funny but well thought out at the same time.
-tasteful body kit
-lighter stronger forged rims
-1 inch lower springs with higher spring rate
-thicker rear sway bar

Does the above mods make it a hot hatch? Heck no... But it makes it a great car that makes weekend toys more realistic.

On a smaller scale you can save overall with a Prius... On a larger scale if more people drive efficient cars m-f that brings overall cost of gas down as well.

So.. yeah.
Premium is that much there? I just paid $3.71 for premium and was bitching. I did the Bay Area $5 a gallon years ago.

If it was maintained nicely I don't see why that car couldn't reach 250k, I wouldn't buy it for that price but if everything checked out ok I think 20-22k is fair

When your drive THAT much, 17 mpg is definitely doable. The PO of mine was averaging 18.2 and he didn't drive it nearly as much as this person did.

Yup, it's definitely achievable.. I do mostly highway (90%) at around 75-85 mph and mix in a good bit of spirited driving along my daily commute on I-95 and still get around 18-18.5 mpg (manually calculated, and is within 1 mpg of dash calc). On a cross country road trip, I got a very consistent 22-23 mpg (roughly 310-330 miles on each tank, set to cruise at 75, with not too much spirited driving).

Anyway, sorry to go off topic.

I agree with the other poster though about never buying ANY car with over 100k miles.
