Well, the 1,200 mile service went fine.

I am taking it in next week for the alarm and other things. So far so good.

One scary moment.....he showed me the work order when I picked up the car...guess what it said....TRANNY OIL.... OMFG! I was like, you really didn't change the DCT oil did you? He was like, of course not, I guess I accidentally put in a manual when I was finishing the paperwork up! LOL. He even called inthe tech and asked him, the tech was like, Hell no, not on the DKG!. Whew. I was scared for a minute! lol

I was wondering why you installed an alarm? I thought our cars come with alarms straight from the factory?

I'm also taking my car for the 1200 mile service at 700 miles....Is there anything I should tell the dealer to do or not to do? Thanks in advance.

6 hours for the alarm sounds like a really big hassle. i am surprised that nobody else has really reported this before. from the description i would think that everyone would encounter this.

as far as the 1,200 mile service goes, sounds like you a taking a risk with that service center...good luck.

No alarm. It's a dealer option. Why are you getting a 1200 mile service at 700? Others have said they won't do it until at least 1100 miles. Could depend on the dealer.

My 1,200 mile was done at 1015 miles. I am taking a road trip this weekend and will far exceed the 1,200 miles, so I guess that is why they did it early.

As for my service advisor....he was very good. What happened when I called was I got a "reservationist" basically. He is the one who did not know a thing about the car, not did he want to know what needed to be done, etc. My SA appologized for it up and down, which is understandable. Maybe the reservationist will get a bit of a talking to over this....one would hope!

The M3's do not come with the alarm installed. On rare occasion, the dealer may install one to boost the profit margin of a new car, but they do not come with alarms from the factory.

Mine is now 1230 and scheduled this coming Saturday. I asked my SA what will they do and he said that they will replace the engine oil and differential oil. He added that no change in DCT trans oil (that is good). It will take them 1.5 to 2 hours so I will just wait for it.

I'm glad to hear that they did the job... wish you didn't need to go back again to do the other stuff. I do take my e46 to Niello and noticed that the folks who take the calls often are not as familiar. My SA has been top notch. I do wish that BMW would get these things sorted out a bit sooner. The early adopters justifiably feel like guinea pigs. Sadly... I had been jazzed about getting a sedan for my wife though we'll have to hold off as I just found out she's 3 months pregnant. I'm ecstatic about having another kid... but just feel bad that my wife can't get her fun car yet. I measured and measured... just couldn't find a way to fit a booster, infant, and toddler seat in the back seat at the same time. My wife just bit the bullet and opted for a Honda Odyssey. I get to keep my e46 (that was never in doubt)... and will garage queen it and take my wife's 04 MDX. I think that as soon as one kid can sit in the back without a toddler seat... we'll get either an M3 or and M5. Hopefully they'll know how to service the car by then! Oh well... life throws you some curveballs from time to time.

I think it is time for BMW to have specially trained "M" car techs like Dodge does for the Viper and Nissan for the GT-R. These are complicated, expensive, specialized performance machines and they deserve special handling in the service department.

That would be nice!

I am heading back in tomorrow for:

Alarm install
Replace upper windshield rubber "gasket" (scratched when I got the car)
Buff out spots on blackline trim on passenger side (it won't work, it's a defect in the trim, but I guess they have to try first).

I will post on how it all goes. They are giving me a loaner car "just in case" the alarm install gets botched.
