Good point about the carbon. It's funny how on most cars you're dealing with the acoustic properties of plastic and steel, but on the M3 we're dealing with carbon (Dinan intake) and titanium (Akra).
Yours should be arriving in the next week or so. Also will be working on the tune for your Z4 in the next few days. Might be down there this weekend btw..

PS - here is my mini write-up of the intake with a few pics:

Your review reiterated all the points mine made. That says a lot to the quality of the Dinan intake to have multiple independent reviews that come away with the "buy it now" verdict

On a side note I didn't know you were getting into part sales these days....

the dinan cf elbow is nice and shiny when it's new...

i had one on my car for about 4 years and over time the shine on mine faded and got very dull... probably due to the engine heat + time

Thanks, Mike. Looking forward to it. Very interested to see what you have cooking for the Z4. I still haven't asked the old lady about the Eisenmann yet. She caught me jacking up the car the other day to throw some spacers on there and almost lost it. If I want to actually have a bride at my wedding, I probably need to table the car talk until after Saturday.

Hopefully you'll be back in San Diego in September so we can get to work on the Z4 and do a little fuzz proofing on the M.

Anyway, wish me a mazel tov!

My Dinan CAI has arrived! For those that have installed, how much of this can I get away with assembling ahead of time?

I just fit all the pieces together and it looks like short of the side that connects to the plenum, the rest can be assembled and bands tightened in the comfort of your living room.

Does pre-assembling the intake make things harder for me once I'm under the hood?

Yeah man don't pre-assemble everything. Attach the elbow, seal and clamps to the plenum then place the filter with its elbow. After work that other seal. It has more room around it to work rather than the one closer to the plenum. after the seals are on all the way (make certain the bottom portion you can not see is on all the way i.e. your your hands as your eyes). once your good open the clamps all the way and fish them around and clamp then down. Make sure when you replace the airbox cover that you get it on flush all the way around so it seals properly. Its not difficult to do but can be a little frustration to ge the seals on correctly. take your time and you'll be fine. Last step is to take her for a spin and enjoy the noise at WOT

Thanks! Looking forward to getting this sucker on the car. Maybe I'll sneak off to the garage tomorrow and try and get her done!

Cutting out of work early today to make this happen.

I disassembled and reassembled the kit a few times last night ... that one rubber gasket on the opposite end from the plenum side is probably the most annoying part to get on correctly going by touch.

We'll see how well I do... I'm usually a dunce when it comes to this sort of stuff. I put the washer on the button bolt ahead of time because I know I'll forget to insert that.

Looks nice. One of the reasons I dropped "race" exhausts was to get a balanced sound of intake (AA Green)/exhaust. All of the race exhausts I've tried drowned out the intake noise unless wot.

General notes on the install:

Work from the plenum towards the air box piece by piece. Reach into the charge pipe with your hand to help guide the rubber around each section. There are small guide ridges on the pipe to let you know when you have the rubber far enough.

The Dinan instructions don't have you removing the air inlets which makes the job much harder. There are only 2 screws you need to remove to pop the piece off. Take it off and you'll have a lot more room to work.

If you cannot close the air box once you're done, the filter arm is not sitting right. Loosen and gently rotate the arm until the neck that reaches into the air box sits nicely in the box.

I finished in about an hour. Knowing how to do it, I could probably do it in 20-30 min now with most of the time spent getting those rubber seals seated just right.

General notes on sound:

Right away you'll hear a difference. It is not a subtle difference coming from OE. It's pronounced woosh type noise from the filter taking in more air at low revs. Adding revs and the woosh is replaced with what is best described as a rich bellowing sound that coupled with engine noise and exhaust noise is super addictive and awesome. It's a new noise that doesn't detract from your engine noises or exhaust noises.

If it makes more power, I can't really tell, but I do feel like I'm more attractive now that I have the intake. I'm going to go for a walk and see how many women throw themselves at me.

1st mod I did, 6 months on, cf body has a chalky white film on it. Others have stated a filter swap is the way to go 900 $ difference
