Test drove a 335 a while back. Got to drive it again as a loaner when I brought my M3 in for service. Did not care much for the 335 either of those times. Reminds me of my old '06 325. True, it's zippier, but still quite a snore.
Hope that helps. |

It all comes down to preference... if he would be happier with a turbocharged AWD car vs a normally aspirated RWD car, maybe the M was the wrong choice.
Luckily I don't have to make that decision

OP probably daily drive in city traffic and not much else. Of course there will be no noticeable advantages to the M3; gas mileage will be worse, insurance will be worse as well. It's like bringing a howitzer to a knife fight in that case.
The only area 335xi > M3 is bad weather driving and gas mileage. Nothing else. |

The only thing that makes me switch to the 335xi is the gas mileage, but I don't care. M3 ftw .

The M3 engine is extremely smooth in power deliver, so we dont experience as hard of a jolt in acceleration as the odometer suggests. yah it'll creep up to high speeds, but like you said if you dont drive 5k+ rpm you probably wont feel any "power". also, AWD makes it easy to launch a car. RWD and in manual makes it more user experience-dependent. if you know how to feather right, dump the clutch right, etc, you will have a much better launch in the M3 than the 335. HOWEVER, "IF" is the key to this statement. The M3 is a very balanced car. I did have KW V2's and nice sway bars on my 335 and i felt like it was a pancake around the corner, but when i got in the M3 i realized stock M3 > my modded 335. the weight distro is better in the M3, the steering response is waaay better in the M3 (makes the world's difference). and the braking is really not comparable. this makes the M3 "handle" in a nicer fashion around the limits. the car is very well composed IMHO. I'm definitely not taking anything away from the 335, but that $15k difference IS there, and you shouldnt take away from what the M3 has to give. Quote:

Lies. I never made the 17mpg mark with my normal driving. You, sir, are one lucky man

freeway miles buy me a lot... besides when the m3 becomes the car that just takes u to and from work then 3k rpm is as high as i can get. especially Irvine PD is watching like vampires man...

I had a loaner 335xi and I didn't like it at all. I couldn't help but criticize everything it lacked compared to my M3. It was an auto... when I smashed the gas pedal, I didn't get the surge of torque everyone speaks of. The car felt off balance going around corners. My passengers noticed the quality of the leather was worse, everything about it just seemed really cheap, etc, etc.
After my experience in the 335xi.. makes me believe the extra $15k for the M3 was worth it (it's only 15k who cares). I would definitely buy an Infiniti G37 over the 335xi. |
