iPhone 5, Lightning, and 6FL

So as everyone knows by now, the iPhone 5 has a new Lightning connector that makes the old 30-pin connector obsolete. That would be the same 30-pin connector that is used on our 6FL cables. Awesome.

Even more awesome is that the Lightning to 30-pin adaptor doesn't support iPod Out:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD...apter?fnode=48

So until BMW releases a new Lightning 6FL cable, anyone with an iPhone 5 not using Bluetooth audio is screwed. Does anyone know when BMW plans on releasing a new Lightning 6FL cable?

So if it doesn't support iPod out, it won't play audio through the Y cable even with the adapter?

Hopefully the solution isn't far away.

Can you run the Y-cable but disconnect the headphone jack side and instead run a headphone jack cable from the headphone output to the headphone jack on the car? There will be 2 wires connected to the phone/ipod but at least you can play music and still use the idrive controls.

bingo
that's the only solution
i don't think there is a way around this
the new connector does not have any analogue signals in it
so there is no audio out
so no converter can fix this

Can't BMW come up with a solution to read the files digitally and play it back? That is what it does with MP3 files off of USB drives.

Otherwise maybe they can have a dual plug cable adapter on the ipod end. Something like an X cable instead of Y.

Sucks because no more iPod out via the Cradle Media Adapter + BMW Apps.

iPod out was the best part of BMW Apps. I don't want to have to use BT for my streaming audio

I have no Ipod dock in my car so i just use an Aux. cable into the earphone jack on my phone. I have a specific one that filters out the wheezing noise you usually get when using an Aux. cable. Works for me and will work just fine with the new iphone!

You mean the electrical interference sound? Usually a shielded cable will filter out the noise.

I think i'll experiment using the USB Y-cable and audio out from headphone jack combo with my current iphone to see if that works.

I did some google searching and it looks like "iPod Out" just refers to having the iPod interface show up on the screen with album art. Things like the BMW Y-cable with basic control and analog audio out from the iPod/iPhone should still work with the Lightning to 30 pin adapter. I assume the adapter has some DAC in it, that is why it costs so much.

Watch the Apple presentation. http://www.apple.com/apple-events/september-2012/

At time 38:26 (and in particular 38:48) it clearly states that charging AND audio will be provided...and the example given is for cars and your other older audio docking devices (when used with the $29 30 pin adapter).

Thank you for clarifying. That's good news indeed.

yep that sound... it was annoying as hell with a regular Aux. cable... i bought one that brings a device attached to the cable and it eliminated the sound 100%

It will still work I think. You would just need to run a 30pin adapter to the cradle and then to the phone. It just won't snap-in until BMW makes one that fits the new version.

iPod Out refers to the video/iPod GUI. Therefore the Lightning adapter should be required only with the "old" 6FL (MULF) and the OEM iPod retrofit adapter.

Otherwise the Lightning USB cable should work fine with the Combox 6FL and 6NR (BMW Apps) USB port.

Yeah, it looks like the lightning adapter will work fine for 6FL for Ipod playback on CCC/CIC with this option. Using the adapter with the Y-cable.

That looks to be what is supposed to happen. No one knows at this point until someone actually tries it.

this is the only thing that i still use a 30 pin connector for. i wirelessly sync and obviously charging isn't an issue when you get the new phone. charging and audio playback are guaranteed but what good is that if playback isn't shown on the idrive screen hahahaha if i could get a definite answer i would preorder tomorrow and test it asap when i get the phone in the car

The playback should be shown, but not the album cover or any other info associated with iPod Out functionality.
