Does a rear diffuser offer any practical utility?

Just thinking out loud... does a rear diffuser do anything other than change the aesthetics/appearance of the car?

If you are racing, and it is actually a diffuser that is wind tunnel designed and tested, you can increase rear down force with a rear diffuser. It has a similar effect as having a rear spoiler.

Most aftermarket rear diffusers sold are cosmetic only.

This is the only one that offers real function..unfortunatly on the street you would be more likely to leave it on the ground after after a dip or speed bump..

Platte Forme A.G.'s diffuser system should provide some real utility as well.

It actually has quite a bit of practicality. The fins on the rear of the diffuser act as a protector for the rear bumper as well as any other vehicle you might happen to back into. FOR INSTANCE 2 months after buying a $700 diffuser for my 335 I backed my car into my Caddy. Not a scratch on my caddy although the carbon diffuser was totally effed not a scratch on my 335's bumper

Will the diffuser hide any of the visibility of the exhaust can from the rear? I am talking about something like a Vorsteiner, etc.
