Is this true, because if it is bmw fucked up big time, your paying over 65k for an M3, when a dude who payed like 44k is just as fast?!?!?!?!!?

Am i missin something here?

This is rediculous if true, i freakin put down a deposit (only 1K however) but the damn car isnt even faster than 335i

Here is the reality. The simple answer is "YES" a chipped 335i can be as fast as an M3 in a straight line.

The reality is that the chip also brings with it a voided warrenty (if your honest), frequent limp modes (check out the FI section of E90post.com), and questionable reliability over the life of the car. And, you are still left with a car that looks like the other 200,000+ 335i's and 328's (I guess some would like that).

To make a 335i on par with an M3 (in my opinion)...You would need to go the Dinan software route ($2000) which requires the Dinan oil cooler ($2000) but comes with Dinans engine warrenty. However, the Dinan tune is a milder tune and the car would still struggle to keep up with the M3 so you would need the stage 2 which includes an Intercooler (another $2000) and the exhaust (another 1-2K) as well as the install costs (probably $500 at this point). Then to have a unique looking 335 you would at least need the Aero kit ($2000?). After that you have to consider the fact that the 335i still wont keep up with the M3 at the track but a new coilover suspension ($2000) might help with that. Then, at the very least, you would need to switch from run flats to a real performance tire ($1500).... in the end I figured I would have spent at least $12,000 on upgrades alone and that doesnt include aftermarket wheels an LSD or any paint work that might be required. So basically I would have spent at least 62K (give or take a few K) on my ideal 335i. I am telling you all this because I struggled with the 335i vs. M3 argument. I have also driven both, the M3 is far and away a different car.

In the end I figure I get all the speed of a chipped 335i with better handling and more aggresive looks, along with a full warrenty and factory reliability for what amounts to a small premium over a fully modded 335i.

And, dont forget, if you just want a fast car, buy an 89 Mustang 5.0 and put a supercharger on it.

Dude, seriously, just get the Z06. Or better yet get the 650i or XK8 like I said in the other thread. That will satisfy your need for bling, and you won't have to worry about a rough ride or pesky manual transmission.

No offense really, its just blatantly clear that you are not the M3 type. You clearly will not appreciate the car.

Yes, newbies like to bitch about replies like mine. However, spend any time on this forum and one will form the same mindset you have.

Yup, its faster and better and cheaper. In fact, //M line sucks, overrated. The 335i is SOOO much better and the only reason to buy an //M is for the badge. All of us are idiots for spending more money for an inferior car. Its really disappointing, because that is what the //M and performance driving is all about: straight-line 0-60 speed, that is all its about Tell all of your friends NOT TO BUY AN M3, make sure those who got one are the only ones with one, and the rest of the 300K people who own 335's can all snicker and laugh knowing those //M owners got duped into buying a slower car.

If you want a faster car, buy the new GT-R...almost fast as 911 GT2...and it is only 70k~90k..

If you are talking about me - no sarcasm was intended. Sorry if it end up coming off that way but really I just honestly believe you are buying the wrong car. Sorry, but it does seem obvious based on the priorities you reveal in your posts.

Cheers

Gents,

I have not really been reading too much in the M3post since the action over on e90post is out of control.

Here is the skinny on modded 335s....the tuning world as we know it today is coming to an end. BMW is cracking down on the piggyback and flashes.

Starting in March 2008, BMW introduced a new DME called the MSD81 which Dinan cannot flash yet - they haven't cracked the encryption. Also it is rumored that the MSD81 also has tuning detection capabilities. Where if BMW sees a tune, they will void the powertrain warranty.

It is unknowned whether Progman / CIP 29.2 (which can be programmed into the new MSD81 or the older MSD80) also has tune detection capabilities.

Several tuned 335 owners have had their warranties voided already.

There is hope for a generation 2 type of tune. From Jim Conforti, he has a product called the Shark Injector which can flash a DME through OBD2. He has access to the 335's older MSD80 but has not yet worked on the MSD81. His device coupled with his software Shark Edit will allow third parties to tune the 335i with a claimed invisibility. THis won't come out til July 08.

BTW, the Shark Injector will work with the M3's MSS60 DME too (along with the M5 / M6's MSS65)..... You will be able to play around with settings like rev limiters, speed limiters, I imagine......

Forget chipping the M3 for more power....BMW ///M did just fine.

Well, I guess I could stop by the lone star state to help a fellow forum member out and give you some in person sarcasm

You beat me to this.....my friend knows Jim Conforti, lives near him and I have been hearing about this for months, but was too tired and didn't care enough to say anything here or over on e90post before it came out because over the last two years anytime I discussed blown engines or anything involving BMW figuring it all out I was flamed as a troll and trouble maker. I don't care what anyone says, their have been multiple blown engines in this country, one happened at my dealer, I don't want to go into details cause I don't want anyone getting in trouble, I posted about this months and months ago.

The piggybacks will eventually blow up the engines, end of story. The ones who argue against this are the ones with something to gain by selling the stuff. Hence why I think Shiv is an egotistical self-serving a**hole who makes honest business owners like myself look bad.

Thanks for post T-Bone.

Hey don't hold back man - tell us what you really think of him.

It is pretty interesting though, the whole thing. I mean people have been tuning turbo'd cars for years so none of this should be new should it? Or is the 335i the first car that you could tune 'undetected'?
