Mount Wilson is burning
This really sucks, that is one of the best places to go for a drive. And I read that tonight there are 25 firefighters up there trying to save the observatory. The firefighters we have in Socal are amazing.

I work with the mom of one of the firefighters who was killed. She is devastated, of course.

Not yet, but it is still in danger. A couple of guys I work with have talked to them on the phone this morning. The firefighters are using Newcomb's Ranch as an outpost. If the winds cooperate, the place may survive.
The CalTrans homes that burned are less than two miles from there. Here's a pretty informative map updated by the LA Times: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...0&source=embed Last edited by slipstream; 09-02-2009 at 01:58 PM.. |

Best wishes to all you SoCal guys in path of these fires. Remember it is better to evacuate than be a hero. I learned that during a couple hurricanes.

The humidity is up which will help the firefighters a little bit. But the air is now heavy and FULL of smoke, it's terrible to breathe outside.

It sounds like they saved Mt. Wilson. Pretty epic effort to protect it.
It sounds like Newcomb's Ranch is going to make it, the owner was on the radio today - http://www.scpr.org/news/2009/09/03/...ewcombs-ranch/

I hope it all turns out ok, Mt Wilson and Newcomb's are some of my favorite spots. One of the guys that works at Newcomb's helped me out once when I flipped my E46 M3 up in Angeles Crest, The owner and staff are great people.

I've heard that all of the trees and plants from where Angeles Credt Hwy begins near La Canada all the way to where the road splits up to Mt. Wilson are gone. All of it, it looks like a moonscape now. Once the wet season gets here they may be huge mudslides.
