First oil change :)
Had her 3 months and hit 7k miles. Mostly highway.
Had two road trips. One from nh to Orlando fl. And another from nh to south jersey. Halfway through the fla trip I had to add a liter of oil. And just before doing the oil change today, I hit the warning again. Seems like the consumption might be a bit high, but I'm thinking it might be because of the high rpms of 80+ mph driving. There were several tanks where I had the cruise set at 80 for the entire tank. Anyway, sending it out to be tested, so we'll see if it shows anything. |

What kind of motor oil is that? I'm so use to seeing gold bottle.. What year is your ride?
Hope you drainedthe oil completely by removing 2 drain plugs. |

But I did measure what I took out vs. what I put in. I was at the 1 qt low warning and I got a little over 7 liters out. Guess that would imply it has about a liter of the old left in it. So when refilling, I only put 8 liters in, instead of the normal 8.8. I figure I'll run it tomorrow and check the level. Glad you mentioned it. I'll def. do it next time. I'm not too worried about getting all the oil out this time. It's fairly low miles on it. |

Easier to fill from the filter housing before you put in a new filter. Congrats on the car. You might burn off more oil with the new Shell oil.

Careful with the amounts...your note mixed quarts and liters...and you mentioned you only removed one of the drain plugs (I assume the rear one). One could argue the very first oil change is the most important since it removes any metal fines and factory preservatives like vapor phase inhibitors that might be in the system. Metal fines and such used to be a big deal but modern engines and such usually don't need quite as much break-in time.
Luckily, this is likely the second change for your car (assuming you had the break-in service at 1200 miles!!!)...right? If so, and you actually only put 5800 miles on this oil, I think are fine. Just in case you haven't seen it, there is a great DIY on the M3 oil change in the DIY section. It even includes a nice video. I have used a number of the DIY's on this forum and they are quite good. |

Here's what I met with this am after driving to work. So I must have been spot on with the measurements. Unless that's the highest the gauge goes. I'm guessing if it was over full it would hit the high level. Last edited by gsxrliterbikz; 04-07-2015 at 08:43 AM.. |

I know that BMW ended its contract with Castrol. If we are still under warranty can we request to use the shell's equivalent of 10w60, or does it void our warranty?

Are they charging the same price for the Shell as the Castrol?

My bad. I probably should have put that in the title. It is a bit misleading.
