Exactly. Too many people go into the world expecting things to just be handed to them. Do a small % get to ride mommy or daddy coat tails and have things handed to them without truly earning it, sure. But 98% of them have a very rude awakening when they realize they actually have to work hard and produce to get somewhere in life.

The whole "well if their parents can afford it, why not" argument is bullshit. My parents had the means to do alot more for me then they did but they made a decision to have me learn a lesson about how to earn my place in the world. Could they have bought me a new car my senior year, sure. Instead they chose to buy me a cheap used car ($2,000) so I could afford to pay the insurance and gas, etc. myself. I've paid my way through all my schooling and busted my ass off to get where I am. Hell, I send my mom money on a regular basis because I make 4-5X what she does and I owe her a hell of alot more than I can ever repay. I don't think I would have the same drive if they would have not done things the way they did. I for one am happy they choose to teach me the right lesson so I will teach my kids the right lesson as well.
