This whole misunderstanding was because OP said the word "race" which for many of us means competitive full cage racing events such as NASA......I was confused myself about his question and opted to not say anything.
the events that I always attend are Speed Venture - cost around 170 and you have 4 session + bonus session at the end each session of about 10 min? not sure (they have levels....blue/purple/black/green/red) blue being first timer and red being most advanced. Speed District - the most expensive one. cost around 250 and you have sessions, but at afternoon is pretty much open track. (beleive they have 4 groups) This is my favorite...dont have to wait too long between sessions and and i get a lot more laps....+ they include CD with pictures. Speed SF - pretty much same as speed venture. Avoid extreme speed. Its the cheapest event, cost around $85, but I wouldnt recommend...lots of traffic and etc (dont want to mention here) they all run buttonwillow, willow springs, street of willow, chuckwalla, laguna seca, ACS there will be speed district at buttonwillow on jan 23rd which is the one im going. jan 16th at auto clubspeedway....dont remember whos running this day (maybe speed venture) might go to buttonwillow jan 9th (open track) but not sure they admit beginners. all those events, all you need is a helmet, nothing else......you can go and drive a bmw X5 stock (which my friend did once LOL) Those events you wont get a professional instructor or anything. Its just people like us who volunteer to instruct.....you might get someone very good, or someone like that guy who was instructing the crazy corvette at ACS that all he did was point which direction the guywas suppose to go LOL. You can opt for no instructor. However it its first time, i highly recommend......one guy never tracked, went full throttle on a blind turn and ended up flipping the car. Speed District, Speed SF, Speed Ventures in that order; I think Speed SF > Speed Ventures in that at least for me, at the Laguna Seca event that I went to, it wasn't as crowded, and you don't have to wait 2 hours between sessions - 5 20-min sessions vice 4 20 min sessions I get. I'll only do Speed Ventures if I can book double sessions - track insurance is too expensive to waste on getting 0 time.

For a first timer I think BMW CCA (check LA or SD or Central Cali chapter for events on motorsportsreg.com for events nearby) is the best. You get all day instruction and classroom and learn the fundamentals of driving, safety, and awareness where everyone is on the same page. Learn the basics first before trying to go fast.
Also it's called Driver Education for a reason. You are supposed to learn something new all the time, otherwise you'll be thinking why can't I beat my old time?
