E46 M3 saved my life but lost hers

So, I thought I would share some heartache with everyone that I experienced two weeks ago today. I've never been active on this forum, merely a hardcore lurker, but alas figured this is worth sharing.

Combination of things contributed to the below:

1) Negligence of tires (I bought a new set of Conti's in January, I honestly had not checked the tread because they were newish).

2) Brand new blacktop road (slippery).

3) Torrential NC rain with standing water in the road.

4) I was not speeding, I was in traffic, 47ish in a 45.

Anyways, my car slipped in the road and started sliding into oncoming traffic, I corrected the slide and managed to get the car back in my lane facing forward. Unfortunately, regardless of where my car was facing I was unable to regain traction and was still sliding to the right, 3/4 of my tires went on this driveway type thing on the side of the road, and the front driver's side tire missed it and caused me to fall into the ditch.

At this point I was sliding sideways until I hit a bank in the ditch and my car popped up in the air and flipped over, with me landing on the otherside of the ditch.

I was not wearing my seatbelt so I slid out of my seat during the initial slide (leaning on the car door) and when I popped in the air I simply grabbed the steering wheel and rolled gently onto the roof. I braced myself perfectly (all things considered) with the steering wheel and the top of my seat so I had no injuries. I was shocked and was working on getting out of the car when the people behind me had gotten out of their car and pulled me out by my feet. I had no injuries except for a bruised hand, so thats a plus. Anyways, pics:

Oh man...

Glad to see that you're ok at least... Sorry to see the M3 in a ditch like that upside down. But of course, at least you're ok.

I appreciate it, you become attached to a car after having it for so long.

GEICO actually hooked it up after calling it a total loss, I got way more than I would have been able to sell it for.

Now I am looking high and low for an e92 M3, stuck in a Toyota Camry rental until I settle on one, but I'm picky lol.

Good thing youre ok. It's kinda scary how things could turn out like that even at lower speeds. Wear your seatbelt!

Also interesting to see what the underside of an m3 looks like

I have the same car and Im sure all of you know, this car is very very twitchy on anything but dry clean surface. The only reason I will sell this car. We don,t have snow or anything that serious in Florida but when it rains it freakin pours in the summer. I Leave my baby in the garage as its just no fun in the rain.

Crazy that with so many negative variables going on, you wouldn't have thought to wear your seatbelt. Luckily you walked away.

Why no seatbelt? It's illegal to drive without a seat belt here...

Personal choice not to wear the seatbelt, I understand the risks involved.

In this particular scenario, not wearing a seatbelt allowed me to walk away with no bumps or bruises. If i was wearing a seatbelt, I may have been crushed as you are held in place.

I know in 60% of all scenarios a seatbelt helps you, but I also recognize that there are times when its detrimental.

Anyways, not the point of this thread, figured I'd respond though.

Oh man, thank goodness your safe. Tyres are the foundation, we must always respect them and look after them.

Glad you are ok BUT driving with shot tires (we can clearly see that they are past the wear mark) and no seatbelt is really reckless IMO.

Hope you learned your lesson. Good luck.

First - glad to hear you are ok

just the front pass side tire? It looks like all of the tires to me!

I think you were lucky this time to escape uninjured without the use of your seatbelt. Just imagine some of the things that could have happened; e.g., arms and/or head could have gone out the window as the car was rolling over.

As other people have already stated I sure hope you learned a few lessons with this incident.

Not wearing a seatbelt is stupid, you're lucky. Did you have dsc disabled? Glad you're alright.
